And many—maybe even most of the entrepreneurs who come to talk to us can’t tell the story. Learning to tell a story is incredibly important because that’s how the money works. The money flows as a function of the stories.” The founder of Sequoia founder explains that the story is how you explain what you want to do, how long it’s going to take, who the competition is, and how much money you need. a16z cofounder Ben Horowitz shared a similar view in a 2014 Forbes interview: “Storytelling is the most underrated skill… Companies that don’t have a clearly articulated story don’t have a clear and well thought-out strategy. The company story is the company strategy.” He continues: “The story must explain at a fundamental level why you exist. Why does the world need your company? Why do we need to be doing what we’re doing and why is it important?… You can have a great product, but a compelling story puts the company into motion. If you don’t have a great story it’s hard to get people motivated to join you, to work on the product, and to get people to invest in the product.” This is the job of the founder and CEO: “The CEO must be the keeper of the story. It’s a real, uncomfortable look at how addiction creeps in, how denial keeps you trapped, and how quickly things can spiral when you think you’re “still in control”. The difference a year makes. 🏃‍♂️🏋️🐝 A midlife construct, not a crisis… 20kg lighter. Leaner, stronger, clearer-sighted. Healthier too. This was never just about losing weight, and of course it isn’t just the training that’s done it but it’s been about making it a constant in my life. Turning up, training as often and as persistently as I could. The pull-ups are probably the bit I’m proudest of as I’ve documented here. A year ago they felt a long way off. The progress is there to see. Next up: HYROX Mixed Doubles in December, with strong teammates and raising money for charity. Still plenty to do. Occasionally it’s worth looking back to see how far you’ve come. It’s all about making progress, isn’t it? And posting some of this journey on my personal socials has helped keep me accountable to the goals I’ve set myself.

Tom Segura calls it the "way in" "One of the big things people always talk about when doing standup is having a story but wondering about the 'way in.' The reason for telling a story is often as important, if not more so, than the story itself. You could just say, 'One time, I was almost the spokesman for Subway. Here's what happened.' But on stage, I started by saying, 'I'm so grateful to be performing here. I thought the highlight of my career was when I booked the campaign to be the spokesman for Subway.' Right there, you give yourself a reason to tell the story. You have a story, but you need to figure out your way in. Figure out a reason for saying it. Don't get lazy about those moments; figure out why." The way into a story is by tying it to stakes; the stakes are what make the person across from you lean in and ask, "What happened?"
