Remember, Labour faces this dilemma and yet still wants to surrender the Chagos Islands and give Mauritius £30bn plus on top. Not a serious government.

Spoiler alert. It's tax rises.

They don't have the slightest clue what they're doing. Burnham can't rise above average mayor level. They're winging it

It's the fault of Thatcher, the fault of Truss, the Iran war, maybe even Trump... can we not acknowledge that, whilst there are external factors, the labour party needs to take some responsibility too, and Burnham and Healey cannot act as if they just 'didn't realise'..

Brace yourselves for the shocked faces when 'tough choices' inevitably translates to squeezing the ordinary taxpayer yet again. Proper Labour approach tactics.

We simply can’t take much more. I have no money left now after years of saving and working. Things are unaffordable and life is utterly miserable. Tax rises? No.

Is Burnham and Healey suggesting the @UKLabour government have mismanaged the British economy?

For context, triple lock currently costs £16bn per year.

But he's clearly got money to burn. He's going to waste more millions giving mayors more power:

At some stage I'm expecting the IMF to step in (sit down Tom Cruise) and Labour will go on to blame absolutely everyone and everything but themselves. Meanwhile, taxes will be cranked up with the PM "only asking for a little bit more" from anyone earning over the average salary. But, somehow MPs will be insulated from this increase. And, having torn up the manifesto promise on tax, will abandon the entire thing completely.

The sooner the state goes bankrupt the better. These idiotic politicians have been so greedy for decades. The people of this country are going to learn the hard way.

No doubt welfare will come up and disability and obviously fair to have a debate on that. But they could save money by addressing private rents and what that is costing in housing support as part of welfare. Why is that being ignored?

Oh what another surprise? Its like a pantomime routine . Same farce every year. This one has a fun twist I guess - it was their own friend Rachel who forgot to leave this year’s note! Obviously Overseas aid must go to zero and the welfare bill will need to be cut. They have already increased the taxes on working people and their wages by vast amounts despite lying to us about their intentions.

EXCLUSIVE: Rachel Reeves has proposed increasing defence spending by less than £10 billion over the next four years despite stark warnings that Britain’s “national security and safety is in peril” The chancellor has outlined plans with the prime minister for a “limited” increase amid concern about the impact of the Iran war on the public finances The armed forces have warned that they are facing a funding gap of around £28 billion over the next four years on their existing plans However a government source said that Reeves has proposed an increase in funding of less than £10 billion during her discussions with Sir Keir Starmer, fearing a bigger increase would be unaffordable The Iran war has pushed up the cost of government borrowing and households face higher energy bills, petrol costs and prices in shops The chancellor is drawing up plans for a targeted energy bill bailout for low-income households this winter and is also expected to shelve plans to begin increasing fuel duty by 5p a litre from September at a cost of about £2.6 billion. Both measures will add to pressure on the public finances The State of It political podcast from The Times and The Sunday Times has been told that Reeves is unwilling to break her fiscal rules or increase taxes to boost defence spending John Healey, the defence secretary, is pressing for a bigger increase as there are concerns that £10 billion will not be enough, given the increasing likelihood that British forces will be deployed to Ukraine and the Middle East

💥NEW: 'If the British government can find money for weapons of war, it can find it for public services.' Finance Minister ahead of Hillsborough talks 🎥Chief Reporter James speaks to Finance Minister John O' Dowd. 👥It comes as Northern Ireland’s Executive parties are due to meet the Secretary of State on Thursday to discuss the financial pressures facing the Executive. In a statement, the Northern Ireland Office said Hilary Benn had invited the parties to Hillsborough Castle to discuss the "exact scale" of the financial pressures and to "offer support to enable them to agree a budget". The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Lucy Rigby MP, will also attend. A Northern Ireland Office spokesperson said Mr Benn has "been engaging regularly with the Northern Ireland Executive regarding its failure to agree a multi-year budget". They added that it is "vital" the Executive "now urgently agrees a detailed plan to put Northern Ireland’s finances on a more sustainable footing and transition toward a multi-year budget". "The Secretary of State and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury have now invited the Executive party leaders to Hillsborough Castle on Thursday, where they will continue these engagements." Finance Minister John O’Dowd published a draft budget in January for the 2026/27 financial year, but the Executive has yet to agree it, insisting it needs more financial support from the Treasury to plug an estimated £1 billion funding gap and deliver spending plans that avoid significant cuts to public services. All government departments are currently operating under contingency allocations.

“New net zero spending measures Table 3.9 sets out $12.3 billion in new net zero spending commitments over the forward estimates period and $18.2 billion over the medium term, across the 2025-26 MYEFO and this Budget. This follows net zero spending commitments of $6.9 billion (over the medium term) reported in the 2025-26 Budget, $24.3 billion (over the medium term) in the 2024-25 Budget, climate-related spending of $4.6 billion (to 2030) committed in the 2023-24 Budget and $24.9 billion (to 2030) committed in the October 2022-23 Budget.” •••••••••••••••••• Don’t be fooled by last nights budget reply where Angus Taylor said he would index the lower tax brackets. It’s too little too late. The lower tax bracket needs to be removed full stop. It’s absurd that people are taxed below the cost of living. is the only party that has committed to do this and identified the savings to fund it. Indexing the lower bracket of $18,200 by 4% will lift it by a measly $728. Applying next years tax rate of 14 cents, that will save you $102. This is no where near enough to adjust for 4% inflation on the poverty line of $45,000 which is $1,800. If he was serious about cutting taxes, Taylor should have cut spending much harder. There’s at least $10 billion every year wasted on net zero and $10 billion on bureaucrats gold plated pension scheme to name just a few. These are just two of the many programs People First will slash to cut income tax by $4,000 per annum. We will also crack down of offshore profit shifting to cut taxes even further.
