I'd like to end this Parliamentary sitting by sharing a story because it turns out that it's not only One Nation fighting to defend free speech in Australia. There are fighters for this most important democratic right everywhere. One of these great Australians is a 14-year-old young man named Liam, and hist story is a lesson for the members of this parliament. It was about three months ago, in a Year 9 classroom in Queensland, that an assignment was given to students: nominate your personal hero, write a speech about them, and deliver a speech to the class. Our intrepid young speechwriter began his assignment by nominating me as his hero. Liam's teacher immediately told him he couldn't do that as I was a figure that was 'too controversial'. Believe me when I tell you that this is not the first time this has happened in an educational setting. The teacher then suggested a number of other public figures, none of whom Liam considered to be his personal hero. Liam decided that he'd go ahead anyway and write a speech about Senator Pauline Hanson. He wrote about me representing forgotten Australians and never giving up. He wrote about my pride in Australia and my patriotism. He wrote about his own pride in Australia and his own patriotism. He wrote about my views on multiculturalism and its impacts on our nation. He wrote about how I put Australia's best interest first. He wrote about my love for my country and how he shared it. He wrote about bringing common sense back to Australia's political system. I think that last point was a very astute observation for a young man at the age of 14. Many politicians have only a very tenuous relationship with common sense. He then delivered this speech to his class. For standing up for himself, Liam got a failing grade and was forced to miss the sports session he always looked forward to at the end of the school week. He spent that session in detention. He was detained for standing up for his right to freely express his views. Over the past few years that has become an all-too-familiar story all over the Western world. That's why Liam wrote to my office to let me know what had happened to him. I was humbled by his description of me, and we should all be humbled by his personal courage. Understandably, I was also outraged at how he was treated. He was a young Australian who defied arbitrary authority to stand up for his right to free speech and his right to express a political opinion. Regardless of his opinion and whether you agree with it or not, he showed great courage and he deserves great respect. He exercised the most important democratic right any of us have and he did so with dignity. I know his parents are very proud of Liam. In fact, his mother wrote to the school to protest his treatment and demand a passing grade for having successfully completed his assignment. She was successful in getting Liam a C-minus. I've since read his speech and I've given it a B-plus. I'd like to have given Liam an A, but I strongly believe we should always give our young people something to strive for. It has been my privilege to host Liam as my guest in Parliament House today. It has been my privilege because Liam stood up for a democratic right I have championed since I first came to this place 28 years ago. Liam's story is a reminder that freedom of speech is a fundamental right that we must always protect, because there will always be those who try to take it away from us. Liam's bravery is an example we can all follow. It is Liam who is the real hero of this story. I say to teachers out there: How dare you criticise someone who chooses me or anyone else, as their hero? That is their choice. You asked them to do it, and yet you want to strip them of that right to choose who they want because, in your political opinion, I am too controversial. That's not what should be taught to our kids. Critical thinking should be taught, a way of thinking to encourage. But our teachers today are forcing their own political opinions on young students coming through the system. Is that really what we want? I don't think so. That's not the Australia that many people have fought and died for, for our right to freedom of speech and right to an opinion. So he is a hero to all Australians who believe in the right to freedom of speech and to all Australians who stand to defend it. And do you know what, Liam? You are my personal hero. Thank you.

We’re launching a campus organization, inspired by Charlie Kirk! A few months before Charlie Kirk was shot dead on a university campus, I had a long conversation with him — almost an hour. He was worried about Canadian universities. The cancel culture. The silencing of conservative students. The indoctrination factories he had spent his entire career fighting south of the border. He had seen it up close, and he asked me: were we going to fight back? I told him yes. Then, on September 10, 2025, a politically motivated sniper climbed onto a rooftop at Utah Valley University and put a bullet in Charlie Kirk’s neck while he was doing exactly what he always did — standing up for free speech on a university campus. I’ve thought about that conversation a lot since then. Because Charlie understood something that too many people on our side still refuse to face: the university campus isn’t just where young people go to get degrees. It’s where the woke mob is manufactured. It’s where the cancel culture foot soldiers are recruited, trained, and radicalised — before being sent out into the world to tear down everything we hold dear. We’ve made real gains. Independent media is getting stronger. We win (sometimes) in the courts. And the battle for free speech has new allies, like Elon Musk and his social media platform, X. But the woke machine at our universities is still running at full capacity. You know the stories: Lindsay Shepherd was a 22-year-old teaching assistant at Wilfrid Laurier University. She showed a short video clip of Jordan Peterson in class — as part of a lecture on a controversial topic. Her professors hauled her into an interrogation and compared her to a Nazi showing propaganda films. This past January, Conservative MP Garnett Genuis was refused permission to hold an event at York University. A sitting Member of Parliament — barred from speaking to students. Those are just the stories that got coverage. Every day, thousands of our students sit down, stay quiet, and self-censor — terrified of being destroyed by the mob before their careers have even started. And nobody is fighting for them. If we don’t fight at the source — inside the lecture halls and student unions where the actual indoctrination happens — we’re only ever chopping heads off a hydra. It will keep growing new ones. And right now, on Canadian campuses, our side has nobody. The Conservative Party’s campus clubs are too nervous to stick their necks out for anyone — they don’t want to risk their political careers. No think tank is focused on campuses. The faith communities, the advocacy organizations — all doing important work, but few of them are walking through the doors of our universities. That is why The Democracy Fund (The Democracy Fund) is launching Canadian Students for Free Speech — a TDF-led national network that will establish student-led, officially recognized free speech clubs on every post-secondary campus in Canada. They will be the spine of the entire operation. If this person is telling the truth about who Charlie Kirk was in high school, then we understand his origin story: 1/ Bully 2/ Mediocre 3/ Victim mentality 4/ Racist, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic The Right wing is a grievance industry for mediocre whites incapable of or unwilling to compete with other racial/ethic groups & their own women. And they have no metric for competence due to white supremacy. In their minds, whiteness equals superiority, which explains why Kirk blamed an “imaginary Black” for taking his spot at West Point. As if West Point ever owed him a spot. As if being white & male should’ve assured him a spot at America’s most elite military academy. This would also explain how Kirk ended up at community college instead of Yale, Brown or Harvard. He was average or below average—a reality that he refused to accept. Instead of managing his mediocrity by working harder to improve himself, he cloaked his grievances in politics & fanned the flames of hatred. Royal Holloway student Brodie Mitchell was confronted by Huda El-Jamal, President of the Friends of Palestine Society, who called him a “wannabe Jew” and questioned why he wasn’t wearing a kippah. Brodie — who describes himself as a “non-Jewish Zionist” — responded by asking why she was wearing a “tea towel” on her head, referring to her keffiyeh. Within 24 hours, Brodie was suspended from campus for nine weeks, locked out of campus, and told to vacate his accommodation. His comment was branded “offensive”, “Islamophobic” and “anti-Palestinian”. He even had to request permission to give his side of the story — against the backdrop of the Government’s new “anti-Muslim hostility” definition. Meanwhile, Ms El-Jamal faced no disciplinary action. This is two-tier policing of speech on campus. The Free Speech Union is supporting Brodie and has lodged a complaint with the Office for Students. He is now back on campus, but under severe restrictions on who he can speak to and what he can say — with expulsion threatened for even minor breaches. He has also received death threats and faced harassment from fellow students. The university is now spending what his barrister calls a “grossly disproportionate and unreasonable” sum in an apparent attempt to force him out of litigation. We are challenging these restrictions and urging the OfS to investigate. Brodie’s case will be heard over three days in the High Court in June, where he will say that he has unfairly been deprived of seven weeks of study time. We have also put the Government on notice of potential judicial review over its “anti-Muslim hostility” definition if they don’t immediately withdraw it and its associated guidance. I think you should do more than just express regret.” “From what I can see, you're brazenly racist and Islamophobic. And I'm sorry to say that we have Atithi Devo Bhava in this country where we welcome all, but your comments smack of anti-Indianism, worse still Islamophobia and even worse racism, which has no place, ma'am, in today's world. So get real, ma'am!” “Sorry to say that, but those comments are unacceptable to me as an Indian and as a world citizen!” While Loomer eventually apologized, perhaps reading the room for once in her life, there’s no way she meant it. She is one of the most virulent racists in a MAGAsphere full of them, which is saying a lot.
