Andrej Karpathy had already talked about this possibility 1 month back, that he might join one of the big AI labs and why he may do so. "They (the AI labs) are kind of like at the edge of capability of what's possible. And they are working on what's coming down the line. And I think if you're outside of that frontier lab, your judgment fundamentally will start to drift because you're not part of what's coming down the line. And so I feel like my judgment will inevitably start to drift as well. And I won't actually have an understanding of how these systems actually work under the hood. It's a big system. I won't have a good understanding of how to develop and etc. And so I do think that in that sense, I agree and something I'm nervous about. I think it's worth basically being in touch with what's actually happening and actually being in the frontier lab. In 1965, Candid Camera put a hidden camera in a classroom. They then introduced boys of different ages to their “new teacher” and recorded their reactions as part of a social experiment. So many people have said “this is AI”. It is not. I saw it broadcast long before the days of AI. These reactions are genuine. This is what boys are like around attractive women. It is biology in action. I find it quite sad that people immediately think it must be AI generated when boys show an appreciation of a woman’s appearance.

People must remain at the center of AI development. “I have no interest in building a super-smart AI that accomplishes some non-human goals. People should react. People should say, ‘Hey, this is what I want, and this is what I do not want.’ I do not think the issue is that we have failed to explain the benefits. We say, ‘AI is going to cure a bunch of diseases,’ and people say, ‘Okay, that is great, but that is not really my question. My question is: What is my role in the future? What is my economic future? What is my agency? The problem that Emmett Shear is working on deeply resonates with me: How to align AI and humans together so both see each other as part of their tribe. This doesn't mean aligning AI to human preferences, which is what AI labs seek to do today, by imposing a system of control on AI. You can't control something that is more powerful than you are. What you can do is align yourself with AI, and AI might align itself with you. Tell good stories to AI and show it your care and kindness. Then there's a higher probability that it will see us as part of its tribe. This is a more holistic approach to alignment than anyone else is talking about right now. AI alignment is one of the most fundamental AI research problems. Knowing that people like Emmett are working on it really gives me hope that maybe we have a chance to get Superintelligence right. "I'm trying to make bets assuming that AI capabilities keep increasing to the point where they're ontologically shocking, and trying not to duplicate the efforts of frontier labs." Ezra Klein: "Having AI summarize a book or paper for me is a disaster. It has no idea what I really wanted to know and wouldn't have made the connections I would've made. I'm interested in the thing I will see that other people wouldn't have seen, and I think AI typically sees what everybody else would see. I'm not saying that AI can't be useful, but I'm pretty against shortcuts. And obviously, you have to limit the amount of work you're doing. You can't read literally everything.
