The shelling method, we use it a lot for doing fur . Cool implementation

That movement.. Space/3d mouse? 🤔 Looks fantastic

haha yeah it is 😂It's pretty useful for when I have my tablet out for sculpting/texturing, and it makes for some smooth movement when I show things off lol Thank you!

Parallax shells, nice! We also used to make furs with this

How is that called? Or what do i have to search for to find a tutorial about it? Been wanting to have that for fur on stuff like carpets and stuff for ages. Alpha card?

I'm not sure, but 2 others in these comments have called it shelling or parallax shells! That's probably it :)

I need to figure this out in ff. This functionally works for fur, and so it makes sense to emulate depth on something I just need to figure out how to ensure the planes on the mesh dont pick up shadow

Genuinely curious, what would the advantages / disadvantages to something like this be?

Lowering polycount a ton compared to 3d mesh with the same maintained silhouette. It's also significantly faster to do this than it would be to retopo it to a similar level. Disadvantage is overdrawing, I'm going to do some testing to see the change in performance vs full mesh

Also gonna note that this is an experimental idea, I've not reached a definitive conclusion on performance. I just think it's a unique application of a technique I've rarely seen mentioned that I was interested in. Responses have been mixed on the potential performance pros/cons

Hey, I do this sometimes to give thickness to leaves or paper!!

interesting. I have made something similiar too. It was a text that the player can change and i wanted it to look 3d. It did haha.

I fail to understand how this is more performant than just taking two seconds to extrude the tread.

I need to test how much stacked cards impact vs higher poly geo. The idea is to save on polycount & retopo time while maintaining silhouette. Extruding wouldn't give the same depth here without doing actual geo for the tread. Its an experiment atm, not a definitive optimal answer

So this is where my fill rate explodes XD

That is really interesting! I usually just bake it in and let self shadows handle things.

I think I’m watching something cool, but don’t quite understand it. Can you tell us more?
