It does not prove that, the glass is conducting away the heat that is why it is not burning.

Worrying that an account advocating for STEM has such a poor grasp of science.

It means that the glass is conducting away heat into itself and into the air inside it, delaying the ignition point. You could do this same thing with a waterfilled balloon.

What is a flame? It is gas mixing with oxygen and burning at the boundaries. Solid materials like paper and wood first turn into gas due to heat, then the gas burns. The glass takes heat away, so the paper doesn't turn into gas.

No, the glass is just absorbing the health and hence the paper doesn't get hot enough to burn. Fire does occupy space as any form of energy does, but this experiment doesn't prove it.

It needs oxygen. Ffs people… think

The glass is absorbing the heat.

The glass cools the paper down so it never gets to combustion. Repeat the experiment with a paper cup, and it will burn because paper cups dont conduct heat well.

Thats just wrong. The glass transfers the heat away faster than the candle flame can apply it. Things burn when their temperature reaches their combustion point (and there is an oxidizer present).

Occupying space us an odd way to say it. That paper wrapped around the glass didn’t burn because the glass acted as a heat sink and also because there was no air on the back side of the paper. You can do the same thing with water in a paper cup. Putting the cup on a flame, you can boil the water before the cup burns. The water disperses the heat and keeps the temperature of the cup lower than the 450 degrees required to burn it. But once the water boils away, of course the paper cup goes up in flames.

This has nothing to do with space and everything to do with heat (and oxygen). When wrapped tightly around an object, much of the heat is imparted to the object. This prevents the paper reaching ignition temperature. If ignition occurs, there is also less available oxygen.

fire triangle... that glass acts as a thermal sink and prevents the paper from getting hot enough to combust. all of the energy that would have gone into heating the paper instead transferred through to the glass. same concept for trying to torch a water balloon.

No the glass absorbs the heat first and is like an insulator... Instead of the glass try a plastic bottle and you will get different results...

What you see here is the difference between heating something and burning it. There is a lower temperature required for the reaction we call burning when the material has more surface area. The coating on the paper is from the dirty flame source and may act as a protective coating. What happens when a cleaner heat source is used? The surface area of the burning is double the surface area of the heating. Maybe it takes higher temperature to combust the paper when the surface area is cut in half. You need to design an experiment with a clean head source, and double the temperature. That may form a base line to see if what you are claiming is true. Peer review time.

Now repeat the experiment with a wooden cylinder, it won't conduct the heat away as fast as the glass and will let the paper catch fire.

Yeah, that's not what is happening here. The glass is pulling heat away. The paper isn't burning because it's not reaching it's flashpoint temperature.

This is similar to classic balloon filled with water. The glass conducts heat far better than the paper and because the person is holding it deep into the flame it’s away from the natural hottest point.

Fire need 3 things: 1. Fuel; 2. Oxidant; 3. Temperature. Cold glass don't allow paper to heat up.

No, it doesn't. It shows that the material has to reach a certain temperature to burn. When you add a lot more mass so that it doesn't heat up immediately, it doesn't burn.

That's the glass acting as a heatsink. Hold it there longer, it will burn.

No... This proves that the person posting this is retarded. The glass cools the paper, until the fire gets hot enough that the glass equals the temperature required for the paper to combust, it won't combust.

Only thing this experiments proves is that glass conducts heat, effectively cooling the paper below its incineration temperature. But hey... details.

What you're saying is heat transference the principle that you're stating should be still be true if you had the same paper with multiple sheets of papers thick as the glass
