Who really cares what color the bottom of the shoe is? If walking outside on concrete it's gonna get scratched up the first mile and then look like shit.

When I was in grade school there was a shoe repair shop a block away from me. We used to like to go in there after school and watch the guy do stuff. Or maybe it was the fumes that made us keep coming back 😂

Beautiful shoes, I love the soles, and I wish we had a good cobbler in Miami because I have shoes that need some work like this

Question from someone who doesn’t have fancy true genuine leather shoes like this, does the smooth bottom not make it slippery on a lot of surfaces?

A Cobbler repairs shoes and boots, a Cordwainer makes them.

If I could ever afford those, I’d just keep them in my closet only taking them out to smell every once in awhile.

I was curious about the purple leather dye. I’ve certainly used a similar lacquer dye for metal work, I was curious about its function here. ChatGPT explained…. A cobbler isn’t using purple dye for style—it’s basically a working aid during the repair process. What the “purple dye” actually is It’s usually a temporary marking dye (often alcohol-based) that shows up vividly on leather. Purple just happens to be a color that’s easy to see against most hides. ⸻ Why they use it 1. Coverage check (like layout ink in metalwork) When attaching a new sole, the cobbler applies adhesive and then presses the leather into place. The dye helps them: • See exactly where glue has been applied • Confirm full contact across the surface • Spot missed areas or gaps before it’s too late ⸻ 2. Trimming and shaping guide After the sole is attached, it gets trimmed flush to the shoe. The dye acts as a visual guide so the cobbler can: • Follow a clean, even edge • Avoid over-cutting into the upper • Keep symmetry consistent ⸻ 3. Edge finishing reference Once shaped, the edge is sanded, burnished, and dyed (usually brown or black). The purple helps show: • Where sanding is complete • Where further smoothing is needed before final finishing ⸻ Important detail That purple color doesn’t stay. It’s either: • Sanded off • Covered by final edge dye and polish ⸻ Bottom line It’s the cobbler’s version of a high-visibility guide coat—not part of the final look, just a smart way to ensure precision and quality during the resole. ——————

Painting Soles is the stupidest thing ever, it will last for 10 mins on the Street. Totally unnecessary

For generations my ancestors were cobblers and bootmakers in Ireland. This is so satisfying to watch. Thank you for posting it.

I have leather soled shoes (Bruno Magli). They are terrible. Uncomfortable and the sole just gets scratched in the first 30 feet of walking. Give me vibram soles.
