A grant of $500,000 toward a housing deposit may sound attractive, but if there are no houses available to purchase, all it does is drive up prices, making housing even more unaffordable for everyone. Good policy must go beyond political appeal; it must address the root of the problem. While financial support like grants and mortgage subsidies may help individuals in the short term, they do nothing to resolve the underlying shortage of housing stock. That’s why this Government has focused on the supply side of the housing equation. We are building more homes. 2,064 new housing units are being added to the national stock. These are opportunities for young professionals, retirees, low-income earners, and persons living with disabilities to access decent, affordable shelter. A sound housing policy must be rooted in equity and efficiency. It must ensure that at least one person is made better off, without making anyone else worse off. This is the standard of good governance. When policies are not carefully structured, they can unintentionally deepen inequalities, even when they sound generous. We must also think about fairness. Should we offer grants only to the young, while ignoring those who have worked hard for decades but still do not own a home? Housing policy must reflect the diversity of need in our society, not just age, but income, location, and circumstance. Ultimately, our priority must be to build more houses, particularly affordable homes, because only then can we meet growing demand without distorting the market. Once supply increases, targeted assistance becomes more effective and less inflationary. This is the approach we are taking: build more houses, ensure equitable access, and manage support wisely. That is how we secure Jamaica’s housing future.

People who are not born in Johannesburg will not understand that reality, because to them Joburg or Gauteng at large is a place for job opportunities, not home.

WILL F1 RETURN TO AFRICA? Formula 1 could be on the verge of returning to Africa. It’s long been the dream of the sport's first and only Black driver, Lewis Hamilton. He’s been a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in F1. After more than a 30-year hiatus, F1 could race on African soil again by 2027, with a number of locations now competing to host the event. Cape Town’s proposed street circuit and the historic Kyalami track near Johannesburg are both under consideration. Africa’s growing motorsport ambitions are clear, but this is about much more than just hosting a race. A promise of $1 billion towards homes for young Jamaicans might grab your attention, but when you interrogate it, the reality quickly becomes clear. With approximately 40,000 Jamaicans falling in the “youth” category and with a promise of 500,000 each, only 2,000 out of 40,000 would actually benefit, leaving 38,000 young people still without meaningful assistance. And beyond our young people, there are thousands of other Jamaicans , families, seniors, and others, who are also depending on expanded access to housing. What about them? Solving Jamaica’s housing challenges demands more than attention-grabbing promises. It requires a sustained focus on building more homes, building them faster, and delivering them on time and in full. That is exactly what the Government is doing, expanding the supply of affordable, quality housing so that more Jamaicans, from all walks of life, can truly own their piece of the rock and build a secure future for themselves and their families.

THE JOHANNESBURG PROPERTY COMPANY’S GRACE AND FAVOUR LAND DEALS In the final instalment of my series on the foreign takeover of what was once an upscale, leafy suburb neighbouring the affluent Bedfordview enclave in the East Rand and Kensington in Johannesburg, we can now more openly explore the potential corruption linked to Helen, the CEO of the Johannesburg Property Company, and the suspiciously low-priced fire sales of valuable city-owned land in Johannesburg. One likely explanation involves the extent to which these and other properties have been offloaded under dubious circumstances, when they should never have been sold at all. A recurring theme is the acquisition of properties that serve as key transport hubs. The suspicion is that the entities behind these purchases, including the Erf 133 properties, are biding their time, expecting Johannesburg will eventually be forced to buy them back—at vastly inflated prices. This is exactly what's unfolding with the Jabulani Property and Calgro M3. A small portion of the Erf that was initially sold for just R1.00 is now allegedly being sold back to the council for R45 million. Similarly, the Chinese owners of the Bruma property, who recently evicted the taxis using the land—with no alternative location for the taxi rank—are now lying in wait for the City of Johannesburg to make them an offer they can't refuse. It is important to understand that Johannesburg Property Company does not have the authority to dispose of land at will and that rules do apply, even to Helen Botes. The authority under which Johannesburg may dispose of land derives from its supply chain management policies; in particular, its “Supply Chain Management Policy: Land” (“SCMP:L”). This is under the auspices of the Local Government: Municipal Finance Management Act, 2003 (the “MFM Act”) The copy of the SCMP:L, which I have been able to locate, is, in fact, unsigned, so its authenticity needs to be established. However, the City of Johannesburg must supply an authentic copy, valid as at the relevant dates (from 2010 onwards). Assuming that my copy is authentic, the following is of relevance: 1. The thrust of the SCPM:L is to ensure that the Johannesburg land is disposed of in a fair and transparent manner. 2. “Available vacant land” is defined in the SCMP:L as “land not necessary to provide minimum municipal services, including but not limited to gardens, parks and similar facilities…..” 3. Section 7 (2) (a), which provides that the accounting officer (the Municipal Manager of Johannesburg) may not delegate his or her power and duty to make an award exceeding R 10 million; 4. Section 12 (1) (b), which states that the alienation strategy should “ensure that irreplaceable land is not lost to COJ (City of Johannesburg) or the public, taking into consideration the principle that COJ land should not be sold, but should rather be made available for use or development purposes by means of long-term and short-term leases;” All of this, of course, hinges on the condition that the land actually generates revenue for Johannesburg, rather than being handed out in grace-and-favour deals to foreign investors. With the taxi rank now forced to use the main road through Bruma for parking, creating a significant traffic issue, and as complaints continue to pour in about the taxis clogging the road, the theory gains traction: it’s only a matter of time before the City of Johannesburg will have to approach the Chinese owners and buy back the land to accommodate the planned transport hub in the area. I reached out to the Johannesburg Property Company for details and comments regarding the alienation of Erf 133 in Bruma. Specifically, I asked whether the City of Johannesburg had indeed been paid for the land, requested evidence of the payment, and inquired about the total amount received and any outstanding balances.... 1/2

The reason is that Indians hire other Indians. This creates the epiphenomenon of native occupational flight, which has been observed by the likes of Lord Elton since the 1960s. In towns and cities in Cornwall and Devon, places like Subway are often still staffed by young English people working part-time. In more diverse areas, they are not, not only because of the ethnic cronyism of those hiring, but also because they do not want to work with 40-year-old Indians. Not only is it an unappealing work environment for a native young person, who would prefer to work with their peers, but it is also seen as becoming tainted and low-status.

'Hon'ble Speaker, today India stands as an undisputed global leader in IT exports. From about $23 billion in 2005, our exports have grown to $200 billion in 2025. It directly employs 5 million (50 lakh) Indians and supports millions more in ancillary services. A significant part of this success is rooted in Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Out of 351 economic zones, nearly 226 are in IT and IT-enabled services. Cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Pune, and Chennai owe much of their global outreach to these thriving IT clusters. We have built world-class office spaces in these IT SEZs, but we have left behind the very poor people who power them. Across India’s tech corridors, lakhs of young professionals, many of them first-generation white-collar workers, migrate in search of opportunity. But what they encounter is harsh reality, sky-high housing costs, long commute hours, and daily struggles to balance work and life. For example, in Bengaluru, near the IT corridors, 40% to 60% of an average tech worker’s salary is spent on rent. In Gurgaon and Pune, professionals endure 1.5 to 2 hours of daily commuting. For women professionals, these challenges are not just about convenience, they raise concerns about safety, equity, and workforce retention. Sir, SEZ Acts permit residential and social infrastructure in non-processing areas. But there is no additional clarity, consistency, or urgency in their implementation. As a result, developers remain hesitant, and state approvals are patchy. Sir, look at Shenzhen in China, a small fishing village transformed into a $400 billion tech economy through integrated SEZ planning. The GIFT City in Gujarat demonstrates that integrated living and workspaces lead to higher productivity, better retention, and improved quality of life. I ask the Government of India and the Ministry of Commerce to issue clear national guidelines to enable residential housing within and adjacent to IT SEZs, with uniform approval timelines, sustainability standards, affordability norms. This is not merely a minor policy tweak, it is a structural reform that will ease urban congestion, lower carbon emissions through walk-to-work models, improve retention and safety, especially for women, and strengthen India’s competitiveness in attracting global investment and talent. If SEZs are to remain centers of economic excellence, they must also become centers of dignity, inclusivity, and livability. Out of 351 economic zones, nearly 226 are in IT and IT-enabled services. Cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Pune, and Chennai owe much of their global outreach to these thriving IT clusters. We have built world-class office spaces in these IT SEZs, but we have left behind the very poor people who power them. Across India’s tech corridors, lakhs of young professionals, many of them first-generation white-collar workers, migrate in search of opportunity. But what they encounter is harsh reality, sky-high housing costs, long commute hours, and daily struggles to balance work and life. For example, in Bengaluru, near the IT corridors, 40% to 60% of an average tech worker’s salary is spent on rent. In Gurgaon and Pune, professionals endure 1.5 to 2 hours of daily commuting. For women professionals, these challenges are not just about convenience, they raise concerns about safety, equity, and workforce retention. Sir, SEZ Acts permit residential and social infrastructure in non-processing areas. But there is no additional clarity, consistency, or urgency in their implementation. As a result, developers remain hesitant, and state approvals are patchy. Sir, look at Shenzhen in China, a small fishing village transformed into a $400 billion tech economy through integrated SEZ planning. The GIFT City in Gujarat demonstrates that integrated living and workspaces lead to higher productivity, better retention, and improved quality of life. I ask the Government of India and the Ministry of Commerce to issue clear national guidelines to enable residential housing within and adjacent to IT SEZs, with uniform approval timelines, sustainability standards, affordability norms. This is not merely a minor policy tweak, it is a structural reform that will ease urban congestion, lower carbon emissions through walk-to-work models, improve retention and safety, especially for women, and strengthen India’s competitiveness in attracting global investment and talent. If SEZs are to remain centers of economic excellence, they must also become centers of dignity, inclusivity, and livability. Ayanda Thabethe recently married Peter Matsimbe in 2025. Peter Matsimbe currently has a fraud case involving 9 new luxury vehicles, and 1 new truck. All vehicles are to the value of R13 million. Yesterday’s increase in Interest rates is not going to do anything to fix the underlying structural imbalances in our economy. It is not going to help build one oil refinery or find a new discovery oil. The reason we have persistent inflation in Australia is because our government is running high immigration, high spending programs alongside chronic underinvestment in infrastructure and manufacturing after decades of privatisation. It is completely absurd that the Australian people are now going to be punished with higher interest rates alongside higher fuel costs. The higher fuel costs is in-itself going to dampen demand by increasing the cost of living so why pour fuel on the fire by increasing the cost of living even more. We are in this mess because of government spending not because Australians are spending too much just to survive. Manipulating interest rates is only dealing with the symptom not the cause. Notwithstanding we can’t solve inflation in the next 30 days, Australia needs to start building more infrastructure and factories and training our children the trades needed to do it. This will increase the supply of essential goods to bring inflation down. People First is the only party with the policies that will do this. We will create an infrastructure bank to fund the infrastructure free from foreign debt and we will bring back the military apprenticeship scheme to train our children how to build and maintain the infrastructure and manufacturing plants.
