Samuel J. Seymour witnessed the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and lived long enough to tell his story on television in 1956 for the show “I’ve got a secret”. He was 5 years old when his godmother took him to see “Our American Cousin”. He sat in the balcony across from Lincoln’s presidential box. He remembered Lincoln waving and smiling as he made his way to his rocking chair. He heard the gun shot and saw Lincoln slumped forward in his chair. He didn’t understand what happened to Lincoln but was worried about the man who leaped from the box to the stage, John Wilkes Booth. Not long after this he passed away on April 12th, he was 96.

Tim Burton on the similarities between Abraham Lincoln & Batman: "I first heard the idea of even before Seth Grahame-Smith had written the book. It was just when he was thinking about writing the book, I heard the title "Abraham Lincoln vampire Hunter". It just all of a sudden took me [my mind] back to kind of the era of films that I grew up in; like the 60s & early 70s where it was like a weird mashup of movie. I remember things like "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde" (1971) and you know you get these weird kind of mixups of horror films and it just sounded to me like the kind of a movie that I wanted to see. It just reminded me of movie of that era and it had that kind of crazy energy to it and weird juxtapositions of things. So I knew even before reading he book that it was a great idea. It basically takes the the story of Lincoln which Seth really kind of went through the history of the life of Lincoln and linked it up to sort of vampire mythology. The idea that his mother was ki!!ed by a vampire and how that shaped the rest of his life. And again the interesting thing about it is that it's not as farfetched as it sounds. I mean the events and the idea of him becoming a vampire hunter and like all the deaths that he had in his family and people close to him, it makes a lot of sense and it's actually more believable than the premise makes it. So that's what was interesting because we never wanted to make fun of anything. We wanted to treat it seriously like a human story and a real story. We talked about the idea and the fact is that it very much sort of Mirrors the kind of the classic comic book superhero mythology. In some cases he's not dissimilar from Batman in the sense that he's got a dual life; he's got a day job as President and a night job as a vampire Hunter; The kind of duality of those characters and that's is something that was important - to keep the human quality of him but then kind of explore the mythological or sort of superhero nature of how we perceive Lincoln and mix those two together and that's what we have in the movie." Yesterday in Philadelphia, when President John Mahama met Ghanaian students, I found myself uneasy as he began addressing the withdrawal of the Lincoln degree conferment. I was uncertain about the tone he would strike. Immediately he said, “Whatever disagreements have arisen, for me, Lincoln University holds a special place in my heart. It is where our first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was nurtured intellectually,” It became clear that he had struck exactly the right note. Measured, respectful and reflective.

A Ghanaian man who returned from the UK for a two-week work leave says he is not going back, as life in Ghana is far better than what he experienced in the UK. According to him, he was a contractor in Ghana and travelled to the UK in December 2023, hoping to secure a well-paying job and improve his living conditions, spending £14,000 on a visa. However, he says his expectations were quickly dashed. The cost of living, he explains, was so high that he couldn’t even save £200 a month. He admitted that life and work were far better in Ghana and says he has no intention of returning to the UK once his leave expires.

I found an interesting video from when I was in Beijing three weeks ago that I had made. Nothing special as a video, except that it shows the juxtaposition of a portrait of Sun Yat-sen in the Square looking and directly at Chairman Mao. It’s fitting because they both hoped to create a republic and it seems that finally their dreams are coming true. 🇺🇸🇨🇳Modern China is grateful to both of them, one because he brought the thinking and tradition of the American system of Abraham Lincoln and the other because without him there would be no China today, he saved China from the imperialist Japanese.

Today, I had the honor of attending the unveiling of the new Abraham Lincoln statue in Salem, Ohio. Salem holds significant historical importance as one of the key Ohio stations on the Underground Railroad. Given the city's vital role in supporting President Lincoln's efforts to emancipate slaves, it is especially fitting that the statue stands in Salem's newly designated Lincoln Plaza in the heart of the town square.
