Exploring with proxmox! Honestly - my initial gut feeling here is… this is not where you want to be if you are thinking of replacing VMware hosts (clustered etc) I just get this whole… this is why VMware is/was the leader. This stuff needs to be out of the... show more

Ok first network change: migrated from Linux bridge to open vSwitch bridge and my private network still works (via my pfsense VM!)

Mission impossible: proxmox 🤣 Ok we have a tap interface! 🫡 You appear to need to disable the firewall on the NIC at A guest vm level (eg in proxmox in the hardware tab)

Bahahahahaha let’s hope my new disk size is ok (ok it’s maybe a teeny bit too smol)

if have.skills("linux") and have.time(-1): use_not_vmware else: use_vmare or cloud 😈

Haha yes. Most orgs: Don’t have Linux skills Don’t have time (Obviously not all orgs fit that genrslisation)

I 100% agree but people are going this route... I don't think this is the only option though. Cheap / Free are great until they are not! We are working on some interesting stuff around Proxmox though for those that go that way and need some data management.

I've personally found XCP-ng to be a much more full featured/direct competitor to ESXi. It still lacks some stuff out of the box, but has been great in my experience. ESXi still does have the most features (some being super useful/cool) but this comes with downsides IMO.

Yes some people are saying that re: XCP-ng

It is why Broadcom has everyone right now. What real enterprise alternatives do we have? Someone has an opportunity to pick up a lot of salty customers..

ok so I was scared for a minute. I thought you couldn't do native guest vlan tagging. Seems the process is bond at the host, create a bridge per vlan, present bridge to guest. it still appears to be CLI to build this config. this will be problematic

so bear wit me coz I've only just started using this: I created a new BRIDGE (OVS) and the internal ports (OVS) with a VLAN TAG. I haven't looked at in guest tagging.
