Mangal has been described by BLA and other critics as a Pakistani intelligence asset who leads a pro-government militia, called "death squad." According to Iftikhar Firdous, at least 11 of Mangal's associates have been confirmed killed, although the final casualty toll remains unclear. Some pro-Taliban accounts have previously accused Mangal of being the mastermind behind the Islamic State group in Balochistan, though these claims remain contested. The attack came on the same day Pakistan's military spokesperson said that 42 members of pro-government forces, including militias and regular security forces, had been killed over four days in attacks by the BLA and TTP in Balochistan.
