Tom Sauer walked through the painstaking process involved: Navy EOD runs unmanned vehicles over the seafloor in a lawnmower pattern, then a diver in a Mark 16 rig with almost no magnetic signature sneaks up on the mine, attaches an explosive, gets away and detonates it. Fascinating stuff from a guy who did the job, on the very first episode of Counterweight.

The U.S, UK, and France are all deploying autonomous mine-hunting systems combining drone surface vessels, towed sonar arrays, and hunter submersibles that can be operated from thousands of miles away. The U.S. Navy is running Textron Systems' Common Uncrewed Surface Vehicle alongside Raytheon's AQS-20 sonar system and its Barracuda submersible. The UK's Kraken Robotics vessels are already pledged to the effort. Ukraine's Magura drones, the same ones sinking Russian ships in the Black Sea, are being retooled to tow sonar and carry mine disposal systems. The challenge isn't just the technology. The Strait's shallow, high-traffic waters shift constantly, burying mines under sand and mud, and nobody can ever guarantee 100% clearance. Which is almost beside the point, because as one former Royal Navy rear admiral put it, minefields don't even need mines to be effective as long as everyone thinks they might be there. The real question isn't whether every mine gets found, but whether shipowners and insurers believe the risk has fallen enough to move through it again. Source: Financial Times
