Eyes Wide Shut (1999) puzzled audiences on release. Many expected a conventional thriller from Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, but Stanley Kubrick delivered a cold, dreamlike meditation on desire and jealousy. Today many consider it Kubrick’s finest work.

I saw this movie a few weeks ago with so much hope and expectation. It sucked so bad, what a waste of my life.

Hits a little different after the Epstein file releases. It's said Kubrick was furious at the premiere, that they'd taken out the most important theme, about the children being trafficked. He could be heard shouting about them having no right to cut his film this way. In the final scene, it is cut so you don't really catch that Bill and Alice give their child up to two men in the background at the store. Soon after his outburst, Kubrick was dead. It's a chilling film, eerily similar to a chilling real world evil.

I think what makes Eyes Wide Shut so brilliant is how Stanley Kubrick completely weaponized Tom Cruise's star power. He literally took the ultimate confident leading man and systematically broke his ego down, turning him into an insecure, emasculated husband stumbling through a terrifying dreamscape However,when you look back at how the film was initially received versus how it is revered today, it is a masterclass in how time allows a movie to finally be judged on its actual artistic merit rather than its marketing campaign

V is for Vendetta. Everyone thought is was about fascists on the right when it was released. After 2020 we realize it was inverted and it was actually about the leftists.

It would be greater without Tom Cruise.

My opinion hasn't shifted. I still have big problems with it.

The only problem is that this movie follows the novel too pedantic. After decades of not knowing how to adapt this story about a troubled marriage, he went with 1:1 (besides changing date and location, he only added Ziegler as an expository dump).

Many? Perhaps those who did not see any of his other films, particularly Dr. Strangelove.

Eyes Wide Shut went from 'boring Cruise movie' to 'holy shit, this is about everything'. That orgy scene still haunts me in the best way.
