He read Pope Leo’s AI encyclical anyway, and found in it “a really beautiful and moving articulation” of what he would otherwise call liberal values. His point is about timing. The encyclical’s insistence on human dignity, and on how people owe each other a certain kind of treatment, reads differently under Trump than it would have under a Jeb Bush presidency. The American pope has a hearing from people outside the Church who are hunting for a moral language that survives this moment.

He asks Ta-Nehisi Coates if he should try and win us over or compromise with us. This is the wrong question Ezra Klein. You need to first talk directly to us and try to understand our position. If Klein really wants to lead Democrats out of the wilderness, he needs to find the courage to invite women in the Democratic Party who disagree with him onto his podcast and actually hear our side. Kara Dansky is an obvious choice and would be a stellar guest. On a side note: Coates’s answer to all this is to talk about the Reconstruction?!?

Good to see CBS News 60 Minutes taking on Gavin Newsom wasteful high speed train to nowhere tonight. Gavin has spent about $15 billion so far and not an inch of track has been laid. They have a concrete structure for the train to nowhere outside of Fresno that 60 Minutes said local residents refer to as their own “Stonehenge” describing it as a “curiousity in a field, a monument to promises that haven’t been met and plans that haven’t been executed.” At best the hope is now that this rail line might someday connect the cities of Merced and Bakersfield. Gavin Newsom refused to be interviewed by 60 Minutes (of course) but it’s good to see this story run on national television documenting Newsom and California’s reputation for over regulation, waste fraud and abuse.

It’s 14 minutes long, but it is a defining piece which asks some critical questions about who Democrats are. Judgement day for Democratic leadership is approaching. The question is, will leadership join Republican tyrants to perpetuate the tyranny and play the self preservation game, or will they say, enough is enough? No more pathetic chants of ‘We will win’. Newsom announced the project would be scaling back approximately 80% but said he would not cancel the entire project, in part because California would have to pay back billions of dollars to Trump's federal government. In other words, keep some of the project going so they can keep taking federal funds and avoid accountability for the money already given. The Biden Admin gave CA approximately $4 billion for high speed rail and Newsom recently sued the Trump Admin for more money. Fortunately he lost. All this for a relatively small route across the Central Valley that was supposed to be completed in 2022 but is now estimated to be completed in 2032 and is massively over budget. Even the Obama Admin was pouring federal dollars into California for "high speed rail" back when he was President. Wouldn't it be interesting to know where that money went? What a scam. BTW many fire trucks in Los Angeles weren't available for the fires earlier this year because the city had no money to pay mechanics to work on the trucks.
