That’s actually the landing gear drop test. It’s to verify that the gear can take many hard carrier landings, and repeated dozens of times. There are other tests that are for a de facto crash “hard landing” that are to verify that the airframe and landing gear fail in a predictable manner and that the landing gear won’t rupture fuel tanks and such when it does fail.

This reminds me of the abuse aircraft take - when I was USAF, my C-130E (63-7803) did an assault landing for an airshow at Yokota AB. Sink rate was above 600fpm? and the g-meter pegged right at 2.9-3g's. LTC pilot (no surprise!). Wing flex was crazy. Later ops. check good, FMC.
