FAI Academy Manager Will Clarke gave his annual update today. Once again left with the feeling that if you think things are bad now, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Number of 17/18 year olds in full time football down around 80% since Brexit.

We needed kids to go away at 16 The state of international football will be bleak for years to come if there’s no funding provided Clubs doing an amazing job but it’s not enough

I like Will Clarke. He's a straight talker who wants the best for Irish football.

The FAI and this State's approach to football is a joke.

U17 level seemed to matter a lot when Ireland lost 5-1 to Poland in 2023 thought right? That theory only lasted 1 week though when Ireland qualified for the QF's of that tournament ;)

This ain’t an FAI problem. I coach kids and can see the issue with years. When we were kids, we played soccer before school, lunch break , in the evening until it got dark , cycled to gaa and soccer, kids these days driven everywhere (despite all these cycle lanes) and don’t play

Why mention Brexit ? Anyone from the ROI has had rights to live and work in the UK since 1920 - well over 100 years & predating the EU by 50 years. Possibly UK clubs have looked more to Rest Of The World players but the Irish ability to go there remains untouched by Brexit.

Except for all the elite countries are making the semi's, finals and/or winning it these under age tournaments and the same ones are doing it at senior level. If you're never involved in these competitions you have no chance of senior success. So the kinda of is a correlation.

Funding is only part of the issue here. What has the FAI and their Academy done in the last 5 years to improve player participation in underage teams.

To move forward as a football nation on an international stage... we deffo need €€€€s ringfenced from government.. but then again, that would be a benefit for the country ... not very likely
