Fascinating watching the establishment freaking out about AI, which they probably should be, yet simultaneously ignoring decades of mainstream climate scientists telling us human civilisation may be heading towards total permanent collapse with mass death across the planet.

Ahhh that an easy one. Climate change doesn't threaten their rule. AI might reveal just what useless grifters they really are. Or might reveal some of their secrets. Climate change will only kill a bunch of people.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 3C was breached by 2040. At the current and increasing rate of increased gigatons of CO2 pouring into the biosphere even 3.5C may be reached by 2050. Also happening is increased heat retention through water vapor load, methane load, and lowering of albedo via loss of snow and ice. The point is, the witches brew of climate warming is well underway.

I think a part of the reason why powerful people want to an are speeding up AI development, is precisely because of the climate change existential threat. Go watch Spielberg's 2001 film AI: Artificial Intelligence. If, as you and others say 1/2

At the moment AI is in relatively early stages, isn't completely enmeshed in everything we do (... that we know of) unlike oil, and is plausibly easier to slow down/coordinate on as its with dozens of private companies and two state actors. And the scenarios whereby which

AI is a near term existential threat. Climate change offers the threat of losing the 1st couple of rows of air B&B’s at beaches in 100 yrs. Heck even without AI turning on us we have to worry about a >10% chance of a Carrington Event every decade. That would crash AI & the grid.

AI is new(ish) in its current form, glamorous, we've already seen the movies and we think something can be done about it by others. Climate change is slow, long term and requires uncomfortable sacrifices by us all, hence the resistance to acknowledge the problem.

Dans le deux cas on ira dans le mur avant d'agir. Le mur de l'iA va faire nettement moins mal que le mur climatique. Aucune comparaison possible.

I got booted from the ClimateChange reddit for sharing early science suggesting this was plausible. Somebody there is running a very conservative theme park.
