Name is Michael Taylor — Michael started working for the FDA in the early 90s, but before that he was a lawyer at Monsanto. So he writes the rules for food safety, then goes to work as vice president for Monsanto. Then comes back under Barack Obama at the FDA for 6 more years, gains further rules on what is considered safe to eat. While Michael was in charge, he told Congress the FDA could not confirm that the chemicals in our food are safe for human consumption. For instance, the same growth hormone that he approved for cows in the United States is banned in Canada, banned in Japan, banned in Australia, banned in Europe. But somehow that growth hormone is safe for you and your American kids. FDA is not interested in protecting Americans. They are interested in protecting the special interest and lobbyists that pay them. This isn't new though. But over the decades, GRAS has been widely abused by food companies and cooperative legislators, and regulators are now determining if a substance is “safe”. In European nations, EVERY ingredient is required to be proven safe before becoming a food ingredient. —— in America, it’s just the opposite, and food ingredients are not deemed unsafe until after millions of Americans are harmed. - Kennedy highlights a stark contrast: Europe permits only about 400 legal food ingredients under rigorous standards. - In the US, he states that HHS and the FDA do not even know the precise number of ingredients in American food, with estimates varying widely between 4,000 and 10,000. He has directed the FDA to explore rulemaking that would eliminate the self-affirmed GRAS pathway, which currently allows companies to declare new food ingredients "Generally Recognized as Safe" without notifying the FDA or providing safety data publicly.
