Federal workers shouldn’t be punished for government shutdowns that aren’t their fault. But their credit can still take a hit if they can’t make a car or credit card payment. I have a bill to change that so federal workers don’t get hurt when Washington can’t get the job done.

Federal workers are going without pay during this shutdown. Yesterday, I brought pizza to some furloughed federal workers to hear their stories and reiterate my support. This could be resolved tomorrow if Republicans would return to Washington to vote with Democrats on a bill to fund the government and protect access to affordable healthcare.

Simon: It’s better in a union because workers have a say in their workplace. When something’s wrong or unsafe, we can speak up, make our voices heard, and hold management to the contract. Federal workers need bargaining rights because people don’t always make the best decisions—and that includes management. When management makes poor choices, or ones that aren’t in the best interests of employees or the veterans we serve, it creates problems and can lead to unsafe conditions for both our veteran patients and our workers. Having a union ensures we have a safe, fair workplace.
