There's this subtext to cap 2 where Steve had to reckon with his 1940s era idealism/patriotism not just being antiquated and overly simplistic in the modern world, but perhaps that he's nostalgic for an America that never existed. I really wish the trilogy followed through on it.

The most interesting parallel between Winter Soldier and First Avenger to me, is how they’re both about Cap having to realize he’s just a mascot for his country and having to make his own choice. It’s best symbolized with the dancing monkey he’s drawing in his first film
