A middle-aged mason, Mr. Ernest Nkrumah, has shared the heartbreaking story of how he has been bedridden for the past four years after suffering a serious spinal cord injury while at work. According to him, he was working on a three-storey building in Accra when a corroded scaffold collapsed, causing him to fall heavily on his waist. He said he was rushed to the Achimota Hospital and later referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment. The estimated cost for urgent shunt revision surgery in a private neurosurgical centre in Nigeria ranges between ₦7,000,000 and ₦15,000,000. This includes surgery, imaging, a new shunt system, ICU care, medications, post-surgery care, and hospital stay. Florence, her husband and both families have exhausted all savings and resources just to keep Zuriel stable – including over 90 intravenous antibiotics, emergency taps, and repeated tests. They have spent over four weeks in the hospital with no way to bring him home safely or access the surgery that could save his life. I visited Alexandrv Prioteasa and his family twice today in Tullamore hospital. It’s now been three weeks since he was admitted to Tullamore following a road accident. His family informed me that he was given a small few days to live. They tell me he was initially diagnosed remotely by Beaumont. Alexandrv is still stuck in Tullamore Hospital as his family have fought to get him medically evacuated back to Romania so he can get to a neurological hospital and surgical team. The Romanian Embassy have been working to get him back. The Romanian Minister for health has also been involved.
