My opinion: Bolaji Abdullahi’s criticism is politically sharp, but calling a $1 billion poverty-reduction programme an “audio intervention” before judging its implementation is too easy. The real issue is not whether the Federal Government announces billions of dollars. The issue is whether the money actually reaches poor Nigerians and produces measurable improvements in their lives. The subsidy debate is also legitimate. The removal of petrol subsidy created enormous fiscal savings for government, but Nigerians understandably want to know: where are those savings going, and how much is actually reaching vulnerable households? If the government is committing $1 billion to poverty reduction, it should publish: Who qualifies and how beneficiaries will be identified How much each programme will cost Where the money is coming from How funds will be disbursed How corruption and political interference will be prevented Independent monitoring and regular public reporting Clear targets for jobs, income, food security and household welfare.. That is where the government should welcome scrutiny rather than dismiss it. But opposition politicians also need to be careful. Calling every government intervention a scam or “audio” project doesn't solve poverty. If the programme is badly designed, expose the flaws. If the money is being diverted, provide evidence. If there is a better alternative, tell Nigerians exactly what it is. And there is one uncomfortable question the government cannot escape: If subsidy removal was necessary to free resources for development and social protection, Nigerians have a right to see those resources reflected in their lives. A $1 billion announcement is not poverty reduction. A poor family whose income rises, whose children can eat properly, whose business survives and whose future becomes more secure—that is poverty reduction. So I would judge this programme neither by the government's press releases nor by the opposition's accusations. Judge it by the money spent, the people reached, the results achieved and the transparency surrounding every naira. That is where the Tinubu administration must prove its case.
