FIFA adopted a dynamic pricing approach to tickets, by which prices fluctuate in accordance with supply and demand. This made for some absurd fluctuations to ticket prices. Standard admission pricing for the semi-final between Chelsea and Brazil’s Fluminense at MetLife was reduced to just $13.40 on the weekend before... last Tuesday’s match, having been priced at $473.90 less than 72 hours earlier. That meant it could be cheaper to buy a ticket to the game than to buy a cheesesteak ($15) or a beer ($14) once you were inside the stadium. FIFA is still intending to implement dynamic pricing next summer at the World Cup for standard-admission tickets and it remains to be seen whether those costs will reflect the challenges faced during the Club World Cup over the past month, or whether Gianni Infantino and company take the view that the World Cup is a premium product and worthy of sky-high demand. The 2026 World Cup is set to take place across 16 cities in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Yet, despite an expanded format featuring 48 countries, the run-up to the biggest ever World Cup ever has come with no shortage of problems. There’s soaring match ticket and transport costs, safety concerns around extreme heat, plus the inescapable fact the US is at war with one of the countries competing - Iran. Fifa is under investigation over its sky-rocketing ticket fees, while Donald Trump has been accused by human rights organisations of ‘sportswashing’. FIFA ruined my World Cup dream. After watching the 2022 tournament in Qatar, I was convinced the 2026 World Cup in the United States would be the summer of my life. I imagined traveling around the country and attending match after match. Now, after seeing the ticket prices, I may be able to attend one game… maybe two at the absolute maximum. During the last World Cup, I saw a fan on television who attended part of every match. It was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. Even if that kind of journey is geographically unrealistic in the U.S., let’s be honest: How could anyone afford to do that here with today’s prices? Shame on fifa. FIFA is getting $11 BILLION in revenue from the World Cup — they can cover the $48 million for transportation to and from MetLife. Rep. Rob Menendez Rep.
