This is a wonderful initiative—reading aloud to children builds vocabulary, background knowledge, and a lifelong love of stories. ❤️ But reading to children does not teach most kids how to read, especially those with dyslexia or other learning differences. Learning to read is not a natural process like speaking; it requires explicit, systematic instruction in phonics and the foundational skills backed by the Science of Reading. I hope @SLOTUS will invite cognitive neuroscientists and reading researchers onto the podcast to discuss why America's educator preparation programs—in both public and private colleges of education—urgently need overhaul.
