Figures reveal that almost £17B is required for local authorities in England and Wales to bring roads up to their ‘ideal’ conditions. The govt pledged £1.6B to fix the problem, but with cuts to benefits and winter fuel allowance, should politicians prioritise potholes?

Rich Tory moaning about the problems created through 32 out of the last 46 yrs of Tory governance since 1979. What a hypocrite.

You should have asked Nigel if he voted for the Tory austerity for the last 15 years as that is why the roads are so bad now & the country is in massive debt. Where did all the money go over the tory 14 years?

I believe that we are asking the wrong questions, we should be asking “What is the lifespan of a road”? The high majority were laid over 3 generations ago, they’ve had services dig these roads many times and they are now not fit for purpose.

Who is the guy who works in London, but lives in Sutherland/Caithness? Never heard of him and I live Highlands and Islands. No doubt another income who came up here for a lifestyle change. We have too many up here as it is! 🙄

Did you think the National Park Service paying 862K since 2021 for subscriptions to Politico is a good use of taxpayer funds?

I'm a three decade, senior highway engineer. This is absolute rubbish.!! Government funding for reactive maintenance, under revenue, was used by councils to fund design teams, social care, "in bloom" comps and subsidise overspends. The money was there, but use irresponsibly.

I’m really surprised that science hasn’t developed a long/hard wearing road surface.
