UPDATE: Kenya's 2026/27 Fiscal Framework The stalemate on the Equitable Share allocation for 2026/27 has been resolved. Kes 428.0 billion has been arrived at as the mutually agreed upon allocation for the financial year starting July 1st, 2026. This 1.9% increase to the planned Equitable Share allocation, considering no adjustment to the revenue numbers, now pushes the 2026/27 budget to Kes 4.857 trillion & the fiscal deficit to Kes 1.23 trillion, 5.9% of GDP.

We are always making history. Tomorrow, 11th June 2026, at 3 p.m., the CS for National Treasury and National Planning will read the budget estimates for the coming financial year. It will be the first time in the history of independent Kenya that a national budget is being presented in the absence of a sitting President. The reason he has chosen to be absent is because he knows what he is proposing in the Finance Bill is so painful.

CS John Mbadi: Currently, the deadline for filing tax returns is 30th June of every year, which leaves no room for verification and validation of filed returns before the commencement of another financial year. To provide sufficient time for verification and validation of returns, I propose revisions to the timelines for filing individual tax returns. Under the proposal, taxpayers with nil returns will be required to file within one month after the end of the year of income. Taxpayers whose income is fully taxed at source will file within 4 months after the end of the year of income. All other taxpayers are required to file their returns by the 30th of June; all businesses will continue to file their returns by the 30th of June
