The way that bird opens the bin so casually... clearly not the first time. The intelligence behind behaviour like this is impressive.

Our native birds are smarter than our PM

Recently, I heard a calamity of bird squawking going on in the backyard. Inquisitive, I went outside, down the steps, towards the noise. I noticed the tail of a big monitor lizard protruding from where looked to be a bird's nest, high up the tree on the far bank! This was urgent. I clapped my hands so hard together it stung. Desperate I felt, to recur the eggs and scare away the predator. Suddenly, a tremendous screeching startled me, and not only that, silenced the entire perimeter. 👀 I craned my neck to see a creature closing in from above, like a terradactal! Perilous, merciless, righteous! The sheer volume of the bird's warning startled our reptile so much so, that it leapt straight from the tall tree, free-fell down through several seconds of merciless bird swooping, finally clambering down the banks in escape. Perched upon the branch above, a large, white cockatoo proceeded loudly screeching for a good minute. The debacle dispersed. This massive, superb character looked down at me, while seeming to chuckle to itself. Shortly thereafter, bird took flight; leaving a peaceful enchantment in its wake. Pure cinema 👌

Perhaps it would be better if you put the good stuff on top. The bird wouldn’t have to toss so much out?

That bird has clearly been hitting that bin like it’s DoorDash.

This cockatoo(?) is smarter than the bin’s owner: plastic doesn’t belong in the GREEN recycling ♻️ bin.

Where are cockatoos loose like this? Is he somebody’s baby? This makes me sad. I’d put food for him on top of the can so he doesn’t have to struggle like that, poor baby’s hungry. Smart he knows there could be food there.

@JanSummersalt The would unzip school backpacks and steal food so I had the students bring bags inside. Cheeky cockatoos.

Ah ha the cockatoo. A very clever bird. Noisy , destructive, intelligent and can live for 100 years. After living near humans they can learn to say words that they hear often repeated A unique Australian bird!

Did the cockatoo finally realise she’d busted into the recycling bin instead of the rubbish bin with food scraps?
