What I heard was, Prince thought Michael only told James to call him up to embarrass him. The rumor is Prince wasn't of sound mind here, Michael knew it, and upstaged him. It wasn't a hatred it was more of a professional rivalry between the two.

But why did he feel the need to perform when he knew he was high? Then claiming MJ set him up to be embarrassed was just ridiculous.

Michael didn't want to perform either! They did it out of love and respect for James Brown. He was an inspiration to both of them!
