After more than five years held hostage in Azerbaijan, Vicken Euljekjian was reunited with his wife, Linda Euljekjian, following his release and transfer to Armenian authorities. Euljekjian was one of four Armenian hostages — along with Gevorg Sujyan, Davit Davtyan, and Vagif Khachatryan — returned to Armenia on January 14 via the Berdzor (Lachin) Bridge. The announcement was made by Nikol Pashinyan, who confirmed that all four individuals are now safely on the territory of the Republic of Armenia. Euljekjian and Lebanese-Armenian civilian Maral Najarian were abducted by Azerbaijani special forces on November 10, 2020, during the evacuation of Shushi, Artsakh, after its capture by Azerbaijani forces. The two were retrieving personal belongings at the time. Najarian was released several months later, but Euljekjian remained in captivity. In a case widely condemned by Armenian officials and human rights advocates as politically motivated, Euljekjian was sentenced by an Azerbaijani court to 20 years in prison on charges deemed fabricated and unjust. His prolonged detention became a symbol of Azerbaijan’s abuse of prisoners in violation of international humanitarian law.

In coordination with government ministries and security authorities, we have prepared to quickly receive the released hostages and give them all the necessary support. We have readied several locations dedicated to their initial reception, which include the necessary medical provisions. After the initial reception and medical treatment, they will continue to hospitals where they’ll be reunited with their families.

I met this morning with the Ambassador of Thailand to Israel, Pannabha Chandraramya, ahead of the release of five Thai citizens from captivity in Gaza today: Thenna Pongsak, Sathian Suwannakham, Sriaoun Watchara, Seathao Bannawat, and Rumnao Surasak. In our conversation, I told the Ambassador that the people of Israel are very moved by the release of our Thai brothers from the hell of captivity, and that I heard how loved and important they were to the families and communities in which they worked. We hope that they will find strength through the process of rehabilitation and healing, and will be able to return to their homes soon. I expressed to the Ambassador our deep appreciation to the Thai government for the support and solidarity they have shown the State of Israel since October 7th, and I added that we will continue to make every effort to return all the hostages who remain in captivity by Hamas terrorists - including three Thai citizens.

The IDF says it has completed its preparations for the return of the hostages set to be released by Hamas after more than two years of captivity in the Gaza Strip. As part of the preparations by the Personnel Directorate and Technology and Logistics Directorate, a facility at the IDF's Re'im base -- where released hostages have been brought to previously -- has been expanded, the IDF says. At the Re'im facility, the released hostages will undergo an initial physical and mental health checkup, and reunite with family members. The IDF has said it is prepared to handle the simultaneous release of all 20 living hostages if Hamas chooses to free them all together. Later, the hostages and their families will be taken to hospitals in central Israel for additional treatment and to meet other family members. Hostages requiring immediate medical attention will be airlifted to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba without going through the Re'im facility. ⁠The bodies of slain hostages are set to be received by troops in Gaza, where a small ceremony, led by a military rabbi, will be held in their honor. They will then be taken to be identified by forensic experts.

Earlier live on air, I spoke about what a day of real joy this is, for Israeli families whose loved ones are finally being returned from two years of horrific Hamas captivity, and for civilians in Gaza, who have finally had a reprieve from two years of brutal, deadly war. I noted that for the hostages who are finally home, it will take a long time for them to recover mentally and physically. But I regret also saying that they may have been treated better than many Gazans because Hamas used these hostages as pawns and bargaining chips. It was insensitive and wrong. From speaking to many former hostages and their families, like everyone I've been horrified at what Hamas has subjected them to over two long years. They've told me their stories of barely being able to breathe in the tunnels, not being allowed to cry, being starved and made to dig their own graves – and of course today, some of the hostages are coming back in body bags.
