The underwater scene in "Pinocchio" was animated before the invention of modern scuba diving equipment. To make the underwater sequences as realistic as possible, the animators studied how light behaves underwater, how objects and characters move in water, and how shadows play in such an environment. They used some references from earlier diving expeditions, and the scene came out as a pioneering achievement in animation.
