This is affecting their mental health, increasing anxiety and depression, and shaping their mindset in unhealthy ways. Strict action is needed. The Government of India should enforce stronger laws to block pornography websites and regulate harmful content online. Children should not be allowed on social media before the age of 16, and strong age-verification systems must be implemented. Let’s come together as parents and citizens to demand a safer digital environment for our kids. As online harms intensify, children are particularly at risk. To better protect them, our government has introduced the Safe Social Media Act, which will make social media services and AI chatbot services safer for children. The bill, if passed, would require social media services and AI chatbot services to identify, mitigate, and address risks of harm on their platforms, and to develop services that are safe by design and put the safety of children first. It would also prevent Canadians under 16 from having accounts on social media services, while providing a process for social media platforms to seek an exemption if they can demonstrate that they have put in place a sufficient set of protections for children. This law is about holding platforms accountable and ensuring they have protections in place to keep children safe online, reduce harm before it happens, and ensure that digital spaces are safe by design all while protecting the privacy of Canadians.

When you let your children go on social media, you have absolutely no guarantee they won’t be exposed to extremely violent scenes. We are not going to delegate to parents alone the responsibility — and sometimes the pressure — of deciding whether, at age 12, it’s a good or bad idea to essentially hand one’s brain over to platforms. For me, before the age of 15, this is fundamentally a public health issue and an issue of protecting our children and our teenagers.
