Finished playing through Half-Life 1

Parts where you shoot at aliens = fun Parts where you shoot at people = sometimes fun most times abysmally painful and unenjoyable Puzzles were neat, level design was good especially for it's time I'd imagine (aside from On a Rail and the majority of Surface Tension)

Overall I would say that while parts of the game certainly haven't aged gracefully you can def see the systems and design principles that later FPSes would take inspiration from, even to this day. Feels like the game that bridges oldschool Doom/Quake FPSes to our modern ones

Surprised you didn't mention Xen. I full heartedly recommend giving Black Mesa a go. It's a full experience that does a great job with remaking half life in the modern source engine and expanding on it (and contracting, like on a rail) while being very faithful to the original.

I liked Xen a lot actually, felt like it was the blueprint for what would inspire the later parts of Metroid Prime’s environments and their respective atmospheres. The whole time I was like “yeah this is just Impact Crater” lol

@BlackCatTeGreat If you play Black Mesa, Xen is so fucking long OMG 😭 It's where I stopped, I've already played hl1 and seen BM's end, but damn it feels like the whole game before it. Very cool and amazing visuals/added content, but I was so sick of seeing purple. Play HL2 though!You'll like it

@SoloMan1298 Dont remember it staying purple for very long, the overall suroundings do change a lot as you go through. It is long, but its worth going through since it does switch things up, like a Tool song. Half life 2 is in the position it is in for a reason, 100% play it and the episodes

no idea! I only played it cuz I saw it in my steam library lol, I figured I'd move to HL2 first since if I have to go out of my way to buy smth I'd rather it be that (unless there's a bundle deal for all of them)

Lotta jank that didn't age well, like some things straight annoying if not unforgiving. 7.5/10 in hindsight, but one of the best 7.5s you could play.

Half life 1 is such a fever dream

Besides the Rocket Launcher and the Tau Cannon, most of the guns in Half Life pack enough punch to be mistaken for a water pistol collection

This is a very appropriate reaction to playing the game today. It’s a really good game, super influential, and lots of things have aged decently, but it’s a game from 1999

the worst thing is when you get saved when you have 17 health with 3 guys infront of you and just die over and over

if you plan on continuing you must know Half life 2 onward has nothing to do with the original story HL2,ep1 and 2, and Alyx tell a different story somewhat

At least it's better then Half-life 2 but HL1 used to be my favorite game of all time but over time I'd say it's somewhere in the top 10 or 20 games in my book

I've tried its updated version (Black Mesa) and it is admittedly pretty fun at times but just oh my god Surface Tension never ended good god

Xen is an unfortunate low point, but honestly it still holds up a lot better than most shooters from the late 90s!
