You are going to love the Backpedal Pick concept. Instead of running towards the ball carrier to set your pick, do the opposite, backpedal and give ground, as the dodger approaches the pick. Backpedaling and keeping a cushion of space makes it much harder for the on-ball defender and the picker’s man to play their coverage. The Backpedal technique basically enables you to set a legal moving pick, meaning it’s a moving target, that the defense has trouble navigating. Then at the last moment, you can set your feet and can be stationary. If the on-ball defender wants to get under the pick, they can’t find an angle to get under. Also, the picker’s man struggles because they can’t easily get “outside the pick” position as the picker keeps retreating and giving ground. It’s almost like a legal moving seal! The backpedal pick technique is deadly around the goal line, making it impossible to get under and much harder for the picker’s guy to switch or jump it! One of the biggest keys to 2-man game is great pick setting and universally, kids don’t know how to set and adjust picks. I think you’ll find this pick technique will make a difference in your offense!

What’s the best way to load into your back leg. When I threw 95, I tried to get as deep as possible and load into my back leg as much as I could. The way I got to 98 was by speeding up the drop and getting into my back leg as quickly as possible. As I’m training to throw a hundred miles an hour, I’m starting to think about it differently. Instead of dropping into my back leg and getting as deep as possible, I like to feel more of an impulse. I’m putting force into the ground and the ground pushes back and gives me a burst of energy toward the plate. Studies have shown that the guys with the best impulse from their back leg throw the hardest. That means putting the most force into the ground for the longest amount of time. When you see this, you get guys like Shane McLanahan, Misiorowski, and Strider who look like they’re almost jumping down the mound. They’re really just putting so much force into the ground that it propels them forward. The key for me is I don’t want to put force into the ground by tensing up. I don’t want it to feel like a single leg squat. It should feel more like a max effort jump. The quicker I go down, the higher I’m able to jump. That lets me take better advantage of the stretch shortening cycle and improve my impulse.

Great weekend in Ft Lauderdale for the PremierIceProspects 12u tournament. We got a chance to take on #1 little Ceasars. As we took the ice, the refs sent the girls to the benches so they could set the nets. They said they would blow the whistle to start warms up LC was lined up to go boards and back to start warms up. So I wanted to get a good laugh. I told the girls quickly as soon as you hear the whistle race them! Something they will laugh about for A while. Kicked off a fast physical game with LC coming out on top.

So every time you try to get up, your hands go to the floor, so you’re carrying their body weight. So they can hit you, but you can’t touch them. The combination of heisting, a series of Granbys to get up and away, is the best combination, and then throwing submissions in there, like a leg lock off of those Granbys. THEY CAN’T DO PUSH-UPS ⁉️ You’d be SURPRISED with how many HS & MS athletes that simply can’t do push-ups. (I know too many adults that can’t do push-ups either…) Why is that the case? 🚩 Too many coaches use push-ups for punishment & fitness at a young age without ever teaching the correct way to do a push-up… 🚩 Too many coaches emphasizing QUANTITY rather than QUALITY… Best way to fix it? ▪️Elevate the hands The higher your hands are, relative to your feet, the easier the push-up. It’s an auto-correct way to get better at push-ups. And I think it’s significantly easier than teaching “knees on the ground.” As you progress, lower the elevation. QUALITY >>> QUANTITY Here are some great coaching cues & models that can help fix issues: ✅ Hand placement slightly outside of chest. Fingers pointed straight ahead. ✅ Aim to touch the middle of your chest between your hands ✅ Your arms & torso should form the letters “A” or “I” ✅ “Screw your hands into the ground” ✅Lead with your chest, not your forehead ✅Body should rise & fall as one ❌ Your arms & torso should NOT form the letter “T” ❌ Your face should NOT track between your hands BONUS: Elevated push-ups are a great progression for athletes who CAN do great push-ups. The extra mobility will help get stronger in more extreme ranges of motion.
