No country is safe from it. But Finland has some unique factors that make the situation different and harder than in many other places. We’ve woken up quite strongly in recent years. Even parts of the political left have started acknowledging the problems with large-scale, poorly integrating immigration: clear segregation, extremely high welfare dependency in certain groups (especially from the Middle East and Horn of Africa, where employment rates often stay very low for years) and significant overrepresentation in sexual crime statistics – the exact same pattern seen across Europe. Finland also has mandatory military service for male citizens. Once these men become citizens they are legally obligated to serve, yet in practice a strikingly high share of foreign-background men get exempted on health grounds or simply fail to show up for call-ups. This has become a growing public discussion: people come here claiming rights, but the corresponding duties seem to disappear. But the biggest practical barrier is the language. Finnish is extremely difficult and marginal. Without it, getting a normal job is very hard, which is why so many end up long-term on benefits. That model is not sustainable. Citizenship requirements have already been tightened and will likely get stricter still. Geopolitically and climatically Finland is also less attractive than most of Western Europe: long, dark, cold winters + the longest land border of any EU/NATO country with Russia (over 1,300 km). These things reduce the pull factor quite a bit. We’re watching Denmark closely they’ve moved strongly towards citizenship and residence based benefits and much stricter rules. The next parliamentary elections in spring will show how far Finland is willing to go in the same direction. In my opinion we should follow exactly Denmarks strategy.
