A pound a year for each person to pay to avoid undue influence in politics is a bargain.

She also phrased state funding as 'you will pay'. That is a loaded question and operationally wrong. State funding means what it says - the State funds the political parties. On the other hand, that audience has to fund the BBC in order to watch any live television.

State funding for party campaigning would mean - retrospectively - neither Labour nor the Greens would have been given any money to campaign with, before they had MPs. Therefore no new parties could get a foothold. Only dumb audience members think this is good.

There’s a flaw in the concept because giving £1 per year doesn’t necessarily “preserve and protect” our democracy anyway! The whole idea is just ridiculous when you think about it for more than 1 second. All it’d do is weaponise that funding against the parties that are deemed to be a threat, i.e another route for them to try and preserve the cosy club for people who think like them.

A novel solution would be that you can only vote in a general election if you donate a fixed X amount (e.g. £5) to a political party after the next general election (Use existing rules for the next one), you can volunteer to donate more upto Y amount
