I saw this being advertised at the movie and the night that poltergeist was released when I went into the theater. I looked in the lobby and I saw the poster for first blood, and I looked at it and said it won't be that good how wrong I was.

Sylvester Stallone made significant script revisions to make the character of Rambo more relatable to audiences. He cut most of John Rambo’s dialogue when writing First Blood, and instead had the other characters in the film discuss him. Rambo’s actions and silence is what would convey his internal struggle opposed to using dialogue for that.

Rambo: First Blood (1982) had an early cut that ran nearly 3 & a half hours, packed with extra dialogue and one liners. Stallone hated it so much he wanted to buy the negatives and destroy them. What survived is the leanest, most grounded Rambo.

Sylvester Stallone was robbed of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Creed. I’ll never let it go. Stallone was shockingly great & Creed smashed my expectations overall. I wanted Sly to win & have another iconic moment in The Rocky franchise, especially so many decades after he won Best Picture for the first film. This snub by The Academy will forever annoy me.

No franchise. Just a dead veteran. Stallone refused. He said killing him meant the war won; there was no way out for the men who came home. So they shot two versions and screened both endings. The audience that watched him live liked the film. The audience that watched him die loved the film… then left pissed off. So they let him live. That one decision created an $800 million franchise, an iconic character, and a completely different Stallone career.

I don’t know how many times I saw this film growing up, but it was A LOT! Its success and impact highlighted the power of popular culture as I know I am certainly not the only one inspired by Rocky’s journey. Happy Birthday Rocky! And thank you to Sylvester Stallone for creating one of the most iconic and inspirational characters in film history! “Keep Punching!” Who’s watching Rocky tonight to celebrate?

Great memories! _DavidMorrell who introduced the world to Rambo with the publication of FIRST BLOOD in 1972, wrote a novelization of an early script of RAMBO III as he did with RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II. The RAMBO III novelization is a must for fans of David Morrell and his iconic character. You can find it in paperback and in a stunning hardcover limited edition from Gauntlet Press. Interesting lines from Mousa in the film: “This is Afghanistan. Alexander the Great try to conquer this country, then Genghis Khan, then the British, now Russia. But Afghan people fight hard, they never be defeated. Ancient enemy make prayer about these people...It says, ‘May God deliver us from the venom of the cobra, teeth of the tiger, and the vengeance of the Afghan.’” In the novelization by David Morrell the dialogue is similar: “Over two thousand years of war. Afghan never defeated. Hard country. Hard people...Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan, the Persians, the Mongols, the British, now the Russians, all have tried to conquer my country. While broke in the 1970s, he sold Butkus for $40 to buy food but bought him back for $15,000 after Rocky’s success.
