Yes Canadian Lawyers invented the term to give more weight to native land claims. It has zero link to lazy Australian Alboriginals.

I’ve been teaching for 18 years and have seen terminology shift from Aboriginal, to Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander, to Indigenous Australians, to now First Nation Peoples. Me personally, I’d just like to know what preferred term communities would like used?

@MazOakleyCogan That’s would be fine if Colonial Australians could treat our indigenous peoples as Australians. You don’t!! We never have

@actualAlexJames I can’t speak for everyone, I can only speak for myself. From my perspective everyone single person on this continent should be treated with an open heart and love. What creates a tangible divide in this country is a lack of respect for one another.

Yes, she is absolutely right and its very bloody insulting to Australian aboriginals that they were apparently not interesting enough and needed a new identity created by lying grifters and fake aboriginal activists.

First Nations is to shift the framing from indigenous, to be able to make it more so they had a Nation of people before the colonisation, and a basis to fight for reparations, and self-determination amongst other things. And yes it was first used by Canadians in the 1980s

They were not First Nations as there were so many different tribes unaware of each others existence. They were first Australians.

Yes, she's right. 'First Nations' is a term appropriated from North American native people so, too, the new thing, 'totems'. 'Totem', the word and the concept, were stolen from the Ojibwa people. But this is not the sort of 'Truth Telling' people want.

Yes she is right. Its a political narrative term that explicitly states that tribes were something they were not: nations, as we understand a modern nation state. This is a political strategy used to imply from "nation" that the various tribes had sovereignty, law, borders, immigration policy, etc, before colonial contact, therefore implying that they were "invaded" and their land "stolen" and sovereignty "lost," when in reality these tribes didn't even have these concepts as part of their culture.

An appropriated term, they weren't the first and they weren't a nation.

Yes. I’m an 10th generation Canadian Native and for ages we’ve been referred to as First Nation. An no you can’t just “identify” as one. Having 1/100th does not count.

Australia is going through what America has just been through with the woke virtue signaling political correctness garbage. That infected Canada, Infected Britannia & Europe. I doubt it's entirely influenced via foreign media/social media over the years but rather NGO funding & Interlopers. Hopefully we can see ourselves through this period of sickness and get back to classic Australia and fortify what it was so it's not so easily assaulted again.

She is 100% correct. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage, be that Aboriginal or Anglo Celtic. But no one should be forced to pay respects with these made up ceremonies. I want an Australia were we are all considered equal.

Apart from which they weren’t First Nations people. They were a bunch of different tribes who fought each other. They did nothing except follow a food source. That’s it.
