Tonight, Mayor Olivia Chow and I came to Nathan Phillips Square to light the Hanukkiah and welcome the first night of Chanukah — a festival of light, hope, and resilience. But our joy tonight is tempered by deep sorrow. My heart is heavy for the families and communities affected by the horrific attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, where people gathered to celebrate the same holy occasion were met with unimaginable violence. Every Jewish community around the world — and right here in Toronto — deserves to feel safe and secure as they celebrate. We will fight to ensure the community is free from hate and danger. On this first night of Chanukah, we stand in solidarity with Jewish communities in Australia and around the world. We mourn those lost, hold the injured and their loved ones in our thoughts, and reject in every form the hatred that seeks to silence joy and spread fear. May the light of these candles remind us that even in the darkest moments, our shared humanity, compassion, and commitment to peace will always burn brighter. —- Ce soir, la mairesse Olivia Chow et moi sois venus à Nathan Phillips Square pour allumer le Hanoukkah et accueillir la première nuit de Hanoukka - un festival de lumière, d'espoir et de résilience.
