#Cowboys Von Miller played 14 defensive snaps against the Texans on Sunday, October 4 — about 25% of Dallas’ defensive snaps. I look at Von Miller as a VOLUME pass rusher. You’re simply not going to see the TRUE value of Von Miller playing him 10–14 defensive snaps a game. Pass rushing is a chess match. You’re studying the tackle. You’re setting up one move with another. Speed rush outside. Counter inside. Get him oversetting. Come back with something different later. That becomes a lot harder when you’re getting 14 total snaps AND some of those responsibilities aren’t even pure pass-rush opportunities. For perspective, Von had 9 sacks last season while averaging roughly 25 defensive snaps per game. That’s the sweet spot I’m talking about. He doesn’t need 60 snaps. But 10–14? You’re asking for production without giving him enough opportunities to build a rhythm. Now here’s the CONUNDRUM… Who do you take snaps away from? Donovan Ezeiruaku needs reps to continue developing. Malachi Lawrence is your first-round pick and needs reps. And Dallas traded a 2027 fourth-round pick for Rashan Gary, so obviously you’re going to play him. That makes Von’s role difficult. Can he still provide veteran leadership, juice, motivation and teach these young pass rushers? ABSOLUTELY. But if people are expecting the Von Miller of old to suddenly give you double-digit sack production while playing 10–14 snaps a game, I think those expectations need some context. Give Dallas a two-score lead where teams HAVE to throw, let Von pin his ears back and hunt the quarterback… THEN I believe you’ll start seeing more of the Von Miller people are looking for. It’s not necessarily about whether Von can still rush the passer. It’s whether Dallas can give him enough PASS-RUSH OPPORTUNITIES to show it. H/T clip by John Owning
