According to the 2023 NFL Rulebook, Rule 5, Section 1, Article 2 states that: If a player’s helmet comes off or is damaged during a down, he must not continue to participate in play to prevent injury. If a player loses his helmet during a down, he leave the game for one down. If a player changes helmets during the game, he must report this to the Umpire. Therefore, a player has to come off the field or a timeout has to be called if there is an equipment issue with a player changing helmets. This rule is intended to ensure player safety and prevent unfair advantages.

Maybe they should've called helmet to helmet on the defender and then Mahomes could've changed equipment no problem
