Five years ago tonight - just after PM Boris Johnson announced the first lockdown. My camerawoman Rachel, producer Alex and I gathered in a Bristol park to explain what the new rules would mean for daily life. “It’s hard to get your head around”

@bmt44 I remember it well, frantically trying to buy PPE from any source so I could treat my patients safely whilst the government lied about providing it. Dressed like a spaceman worrying that every patient with toothache was going to infect me with a deadly disease. Good times!

It’s now looking back mind boggling what happened. The people that died, the people that cared for our nearest and dearest. We owe them so much x

How Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock avoided jail still amazes me to this day

Crazy that it was 5 years ago Jon! I live alone & was already working from home. It was the BBC News especially BBC Breakfast & Sainsburys delivery drivers that most helped me get through the nightmare ❤️ Thank you for that #Sainsburys #BBCBreakfast #BBCNews

Thank you for being a light in those dark times. Those days were frightening & a reminder of how these pandemics pepper human history. Would watch the BBC everyday for information, never under estimate your impact & how we trusted you

The bubonic plague had a phase of becoming a pneumonic plague by way of advancing to the lungs. Those ancient Brits didn't have the best of days by their end. Whilst we didn't shutdown society like they tend to do in Western movies: with the sheriff locked up with the doctor and the fever-ridden jailbird, the cautionary example of reducing contact whilst learning what the pathogen's characteristics are and how to treat, improve outcomes (or over the subsequent years, learn how to sterilise its form) remain as wise approaches. Hindsight is a wonderful way to make mockery of public health controls and messaging. Healthcare workers were glad of it and encouraged us to take precautions even after many thought the danger was over and most who'd be prone to dying had already gone. Perhaps fewer will comply next time, and some percentage of those may harbour regret whilst staring at a hospital ceiling. Hopefully not a corridor one and hopefully not with their mortality facing them. Thank you for your essential worker response and dedication during those bleak times, Jon. Am still in awe of our NHS and am fully respectful of our associated support agencies. Apologies for the long reply.

For the deniers, if you saw what I saw, what I experienced, the things we had to do, you would probably have more than one brain cell functioning. During the first year of the pandemic, you simply have no concept, none.

My friends who worked in food retail & transport still had to carry on working. The biggest scandal was the throwing of youngsters ‘under the bus’ by shutting education establishments. They & society are paying a high price for that now. The World went mad !

It was life changing. My daughter in law worked as a junior doctor on a Covid ward in Wales. Scary times x
