So, if I'm elevated 6 ft, I can see over my neighbor's fence. If I'm on my knees, I can't. I've hiked several mountains in Oregon. I've still never seen China, or Europe. Why?

The straight line distance can be tested using GMRS radios. If you have two boats each with a 100 foot tall tower from which you can transmit. The maximum distance you could transmit with these radios would be about 28 miles. Even if the radios are rated to transmit much further, which many of them are capable of transmitting up to 100 miles. But on the flat plane of the ocean, this will not be the case due to the curvature of the Earth. And of course this distance will be less if you don’t have 100 foot tower from which to transmit.
