Since the initial design of the modular FLEX rover, Astrolab has focused on developing a mobility solution to meet the near- and long-term needs of the lunar economy. Use cases include everything from transporting large payloads on the lunar surface in lander-agnostic containers to deploying essential lunar infrastructure. Activities like rolling out cables are crucial for establishing and connecting alternative power sources on the Moon. For example, cable roll-out is key in the deployment and operations of fission power systems and other critical infrastructure. Early in rover development, we performed field tests of custom payloads that could support power and comms infrastructure, collect samples, and facilitate the use of lunar resources. These tests informed the development of our design to ensure FLEX is as “flexible” as possible.

Astrolab is gearing up to send its FLEX lunar rover to the Moon aboard a SpaceX Starship, marking a major step forward in lunar exploration. Roughly the size of an SUV, the rover is built to carry two astronauts while also being capable of remote operation from Earth. Designed for future missions, FLEX will play a key role in helping crews explore and navigate the Moon’s south pole, supporting both human presence and robotic operations on the lunar surface.

Pegasus is going to the Moon! Built for NASA's LTVS contract, Pegasus provides Artemis Astronauts with reliable, safe, and highly achievable mobility on the Moon in 2028. Capable of operating manually or autonomously, this next generation LTV can traverse 900+ kilometers of rugged lunar terrain at speeds up to 15 KPH. Pegasus leverages the resiliency of our spaceflight-proven rover technologies, enabling it to operate for at least one year and through the lunar night. Pegasus is the first step in laying the groundwork for a Moon Base. NASA #TheNextLeap #LunarOutpost #DrivingArtemis #SpaceTech #Innovation

Artemis-era lunar rovers will be a big upgrade from those of the Apollo days! Apollo’s lunar roving vehicles (LRVs) were a marvel of engineering that paved the path for lunar exploration and set the stage for what our FLIP and FLEX rovers can achieve today. Let’s look at the vehicle specs: Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle Range: Less than 100km Payload Capacity: Less than ½ ton Batteries: Not rechargeable Controls: Full manual Tires: Zinc-coated piano wire mesh tires FLEX-Lunar Terrain Vehicle Range: Thousands of kilometers Payload Capacity: More than 2 tons Batteries: Rechargeable Controls: Onboard autonomy (plus a 6-degree-of-freedom robotic arm) Tires: High traction, hyper-deformable airless tires Both vehicles were designed for two very different missions but together will mark crucial moments in the history of human presence on the Moon.

Testing the next lunar rover. Fun to go to the hottest place on Earth to help develop Astrolab's FLEX vehicle. It has multiple cool new tech ideas, to be used when the FLIP version rolls on the Moon soon. Advances from both are being built into the CLV-1 Crewed Lunar Vehicle that NASA chose for Moon Base - will go over 6 mph, directly and remotely piloted.

Thanks to some creative unfolding with design and test heritage from our FLEX rover, our stowed CLV-1 measures approximately 2 x 2.3 x 2.2 meters on its journey to the Moon and unfolds after deploying onto the lunar surface. Limbs are deployed into the driving configuration using actuators linked to the suspension assemblies. These also allow the chassis to be raised and lowered to the ground to make it easier for Artemis crews to get in and out. Fully unfolded, the rover sits approximately 4 x 2.3 x 2.6 meters.
