The Right has turned on Flock Safety. In the past few weeks, it’s been hard to scroll X for even five minutes without running into some anti-Flock screed, or some news about Flock's automated license-plate reading cameras (ALPRs) being destroyed by angry citizens. And I can recall few instances of a private company raising so many passions. It’s no surprise that the radical left wants Flock obliterated. If Antifa and Black Lives Matter types are unable to defund the police, the next best thing would be to strip the police of their tools. But many forces on the right want Flock cameras gone as well. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri has launched an investigation into Flock’s practices. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has decided to take down the Flock cameras owned by the state government. Westland will remove its ten Flock Safety license plate-reading cameras when the city’s contract expires at the end of the month. It comes after Westland Police Chief Kyle Dawley decided not to bring a renewal contract to the Westland City Council for approval. In a statement, the Westland Police Department said discussions with council members about how the cameras are used showed the council is “deeply split on this matter.” Flock Safety defended the technology’s value in a statement, arguing that removing systems used to solve violent crimes and find missing people can slow investigations. The company said that in 2025 its technology supported more than 1 million criminal investigations and incidents, contributed to an estimated 20% of solved cases in jurisdictions where it is deployed, and helped locate more than 10,000 missing people.

It is a fundamental right in a free society, protected precisely because unchecked government surveillance is dangerous. Will Freeman, founder of DeFlock, is challenging Flock Safety’s expanding camera network. The fight surrounding Freeman, Flock CEO Garrett Langley, and the lawsuit known as Langley v. Freeman exposes the deeper issue: once surveillance infrastructure is built, who decides how it will be used, and where does it stop? Flock cameras are only one piece.
