During her descent, her main parachute got tangled around her leg, and when she deployed her reserve, both parachutes were ejected in opposite directions, causing her to spiral down rapidly. Despite suffering a broken back, leg, and ankle, Hatmaker spent over four weeks in the hospital and was able to walk again within three months of the accident.
