Feels like just another thing to worry about breaking

What happens if they get stuck closed?

This would corrode in a week in saltwater

The Folding Propeller is for Sail Boats. Less Drag.

Can’t get past more moving parts on something that on average are 4,000 rpm. Out on the open water traditional prop for me.

Yeah that's not why

it would be a nightmare to reset the gear ratios if you needed to perform maintenance on that

The number of responses that have never seen a ship or yacht propeller system and willingly display their ignorance is gratifying.

That would be good for getting through weeds and over logs too

None of these folding propellers in the video have the cutting mechanism

AI Slop. Indian? None of the clips with the anti-tangle tool were on a folding prop.

Yes that drag is actually really helpful to have though that’s your only form of breaking while on the water

Just like a variable pitch propeller used in aviation? (but not that variable)

Assisted gliders use folding propellers too for the same reason.

Once I had to jump off a sailing boat in the international water to safe our crew from a jammed sailing rope around the propeller. It took me few dives and a knife. I felt like a hero seeing the whole 10-persons crew waiting for me to come up with with a cutter rope. It was freezing cold. Anyway Daniel the Italian international master in diving disappeared when we had this accident until I went out to see him bringing hot tea.

That's why you sail in reverse.
