Folks hate simple, and I don’t get it…

Oh no, it’s definitely simple. But why would I buy it when I can get a loaded maverick for roughly the same price?

But you can’t. The BASE Maverick (which still has a lot more features than this) is more expensive than the Slate. There is NO truck in the US cheaper than this.

Dude, the Maverick has an MSRP of 28k. You are splitting hairs. 3k for all the features the Maverick brings over the Slate is inexcusable.

Base Maverick is 30k after delivery, so higher taxes as well. Assuming there is a completely poverty spec model even on a lot somewhere and not one with "mandatory" options. Then you have maintenance, gas, etc on top. Comped to slate @ 25k and practically zero maintenance and cheap electricity.

@MandicReally The Slate's 25k is without delivery, fees, etc as well, so it'll probably be around 30-35k out the door as well as the Maverick. The Maverick is just better for the money. There is no excuse for it.

@MandicReally

@MandicReally Uh huh, and after taxes and fees and all that bullshit, it'll be around 30-35k depending on where you live. This isn't rocket surgery.

The crank isn't user upgradable and motorized has been standard in consumer cars for DECADES. not an ununderstandable concept, especially when most still finance and competition is the Chevy Bolt. Comparing the chassis critisism to wiring, two small motors n buttons isn't fair.

If it’s rivaling tech from 25 years ago then it needs to be rivaling prices from 25 years ago. $25,000 is still way too much when significantly better mid-size trucks can be had for $30-35k.

A more fair critique, but there is not a single new car or truck under $20,000 these days. I doubt we will ever see one again unfortunately.

Ford Maverick Hybrid truck was $19k 4 years ago. It can be done. Won’t be with the powers at be in charge.

It was done, 5 years ago, & even then few actually paid the $19k. Half a decade later there isn't a single new car under $20k, not even a Hyundai. So 'It can be done' is really 'it was done in 2021.' The market that made that isn't here today. Inflation, tariffs, & more happened.

At 15k, I agree.

There is no such thing as a new car under $20,000 in the US today. So sadly, that’s just not happening.

That's the point. It *could* have made real waves, instead it's just meh

The problem is that for that price you can buy a truck that has more tech in it for a few grand more. Or even a kei truck for far cheaper (this is in cad but the location is in the southern US)

You can’t legally drive a Kei truck in much of the US. And I paid $2,000 for my 02 GMC truck 2 years ago. If we are comparing to 25 year old vehicles… well, we aren’t.

You can in most of the US, would you rather have your 02 truck or a new truck that doesn't have speakers, navigation, one gear, and pure plastic everywhere.

"As of 2025, kei trucks are not authorized to travel on interstate highways in any U.S. state.", the same source that had that also listed 23 states as "Legal" for Kei Trucks, so less than half. I'm in Oregon, they are not road legal here.

You didn't answer the other part

My 02 doesn't have nav, working speakers, power windows, cruise control, etc. If Slate had an 8 foot bed, I'd be talking to the wife about putting down a deposit. I'm a former custom car builder & current professional "maker" customizing things is my life... I'd make it mine.

It’s fucking electric. Main problem. We don’t want that shit delete all that extra shit. I already have complicated just need something simple.

I don't get it either. Especially when it comes to utilitarian vehicles. Heck, I don't even mind the shorter bed, it's big enough for the use I'd put it to. I think the complainers don't understand the target for the Slate. It's not supposed to be a super comfy daily commuter or a long distance hauler. It fits the niche that the old Datsun and Toyota pickups filled. It's a low(ish) cost inner city/short distance utility truck.

Yea, if I was still back in Philadelphia still, I'd probably have put down a deposit already.

Issue is that's not cheap. $25,+++ is not cheap. call me at 19 or even 17k

There is not a SINGLE new car for under $20k in the US right now… so it would have to be the cheapest car going right now, from a new brand that likely doesn’t have the infrastructure to meet that price point.

@catching45 What year is it again? Sure you should be the one throwing names around?

This is a 15k truck, not 25k. That's the problem.

I don't want an electric. But if it's electric, why not electric windows?

It’s worse than that. With allocation, dealerships only ever order high end trucks to they can make more profit. That artificially inflates the “demand” from the customer and stifles the true demand for simple.

Yep. Even as far back as 2004 my dad had to special order in a stripped down work truck because that's what he wanted. The dealer was practically begging him to just buy something on the lot instead.

Yup, SO many times the dealership will say, “sorry, we don’t have any allocation left for special orders, here’s what we have”.

It’s more than just crank windows and screens that caused $70k+ trucks

Right, it's not the only cause. But it's real part of the problem, automakers pushed comfort packages, stripped trucks stopped selling cuz you had to special order them, so they axed the cheap options. Regs, tariffs & big-truck demand handled much of the rest.

True. But I think consumer preferences dictated some of that. And also more features typically means a higher price with more margin for the manufacture. These trucks sell very well despite their price point.

Chevy Bolt Euv - More range, more power, 5 seats, power windows, 5 doors, infotainment system, and about the same price...

They don’t make the EUV anymore… The current Bolt is $30,000 and can transport, a suitcase… It’s an economy car, not a truck.

They do the Bolt EUV again. The cheapest one in Sam's club is just $26500. It's not a truck, true. But it's big enough for a family of five, and I can sit behind myself and still have almost a foot between my knees and the driver's seat. The size difference isn't that big, anyway

A slow ass low range electric truck with no power and a small battery Oh, but it's cheap because of hand crank windows... Solid axles? You're saying they can't just idk, use a proven independent rear setup from a factory that already produces the same components? Sure

If you use someone else components you are at their mercy, for supply. And you have to design all of your hardware around their design. Likely driving up part cost for yours. And at the end of the day, even a simple IRS is more parts. More parts = More $$.

At this price you can just get a maverick with low miles. Theres just simply no value proposition

I wouldn’t want an electric car, no matter how cheap. Sorry

Yeah nobody requested a brand new company design a new vehicle from scratch. Being electric is a big problem

I drive a 2001 Tacoma. Radio doesn't work and half the lights on the dash don't work. It's perfect for my needs. Want all the small add-ons? Gonna have to pay for it

allow chinese imports

People don't actually know what they want. Don't listen to comments and look at sales instead. There's a sub set of people that only complain about whatever they interact with. Listening to them is a mistake because you will give them exactly what they want and will stil complain

It should offer a six cylinder or four-cylinder gas

I love the idea of a cheap inner city utility vehicle. But at 2 doors and a rear seat costing the use of the bed. It's just impractical if you have a family or little one. Unless you have the budget or space for a "fun" car

I’ve never bought a new vehicle in my life. I’m still driving an 86 s15 I bought in high school. I paid 2500 for it and it has crank windows, standard tranny, and a cassette radio. I’m okay with it and I wish we could get more vehicles like it. (Maybe not the cassette player)

I like it.

Absolutely no one would hate it if it was $10K. All we want are those little cute toy trucks that Toyota makes for the Asian market. You can buy a real truck for $25K, not new, but real. This is an overpriced golf cart.

its literally $25,000 with no radio

People are just retarded

These people really just want like a 2000s car. Some modern amenities but not the new touch screens

I'm excited about the Slate line up. Can't wait to see them.

Me too. If the truck had an 8 foot (or close) bed, I’d be very tempted to get one. (See a critique, not a nitpick…)

Internal combustion, accept no substitutes

Nobody complained about buttons and switches? People want more buttons and less tablets. I have never once seen a single person complain about buttons.

I don’t think the problem is simple, the problem is that it’s still pretty pricey. If it were $22K I think folks would laud it but it’s just a few shy of a Ford Maverick so why bother

It's solely because its an EV.

What dumbass was complaining about a solid axle?
