Nigerian troops, supported by air power, repelled an ISWAP attack before launching a devastating counteroffensive against the terrorists along the Buratai axis. In the early hours of 19 June 2026, ISWAP terrorists launched coordinated attacks on military positions at Dusten Kura and along Chara Road in Buratai, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State. Nigerian troops detected the insurgents movements early and responded with a well coordinated air and ground operation, successfully engaging the attackers and disrupting the assault. Nigeria is the only country in the region with the necessary assets to effectively deny ISWAP sanctuary in the Lake Chad islands. Neither Cameroon, Niger, or Chad possesses the air assets required to conduct strategic bombardment of ISWAP camps consistently at this scale.
