During the post-production of "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" (1970), Elio Petri and Ruggero Mastroianni pranked Ennio Morricone by showing him an alternate edit of the opening scene with a completely different score than the one he composed for this film. Immediately after seeing it, Morricone angrily said, "Elio, What a damn is this?", for which Petri replied to Morricone, "It was fantastic". Ruggero Mastroianni said, "don't you see it's extraordinary?" & Morricone replied, "How can you like the music for this scene?, it doesn't fit with it". Then, failing to convince them, Morricone gave up and told them, "Do as you like". Then immediately afterwards, Petri said to Morricone, "You created the best music I could ever imagine. You should slap me in the face (for playing the prank)". The words of Petri at the end moved Morricone deeply.
