For basically the last decade all I heard from Toronto Maple Leafs executives after the season was “we made progress and the core isn’t going anywhere”. Brad Treliving didn’t do that today. I believe this is the tone a lot of Leafs fans wanted to hear.

Been saying for decades, you gotta have ONE ALL-STAR shut-down D that can play 30+ mins and contribute offensively.

What I'm sensing from Treliving is that there are few players on the current roster with the mentality that he's looking for. He mentioned, "bring people in with that mindset". Skill is not enough.

Shanahan set this organization back at least 5 years 2 years ago when they didn't let Brad trade Marner. We could have retooled the team and gained draft capital. Instead he walks for nothing. Brad has a tough job ahead. Little to no draft capital and prospects for trades.

Except tone doesn't pay the bills. Execution does contribute though. Marner walking with no compensation at all is a fail. That aside, the likelihood of using his $ on a set of free agents that elevates the team is a probable fail too.

The core is needed to get them into the playoffs, well they can probably lose a piece and still get there. But they need those grinders that can handle the added physicality of the playoffs.

Correct he said a dna change is necessary, which means the core will change, means they will most likely move on from Marner. That’s what most on twitter seem to want, so presumably this is a happy day for the Marner haters.

What's so infuriating is that this has been the model to build Stanley Cup champions since Jesus was a baby. And we ended up going on this years-long experiment with skill & analytics that clearly wasn't it. So another big chunk of a decade to unwind it and get back to square 1.

Hard to give the Leafs management any credit for changing the core when it's Marner deciding on his own to leave.
